Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, declared a state of emergency shortly after two powerful earthquakes struck the country, leaving nearly 200 dead, thousands injured, and many missing. Non-essential services and classes have been suspended until further notice. There are power outages in several parts of the country. Late in the afternoon of this Thursday, June 25, President Lula (PT) spoke by phone with Rodríguez and announced that he will send a field hospital to treat the victims. From the United States, President Nicolás Maduro – who, along with his wife Cilia Flores, has been held captive since January – expressed solidarity with his people in a message posted on his social media, saying that the country “is going through trials.”

Bolivia: US Interference Through Military Intelligence Support Is Denounced

Bolivian political leader Christian Velasco denounces U.S. interference in Bolivia’s internal affairs and rejects the policy of surrendering Bolivia’s natural resources—especially lithium—in exchange for military security for the ruling elites. “We want to denounce that our country is being held hostage by the U.S. and that there is serious interference in the affairs of Bolivians,” stated Velasco. According to the leader, military attachés from the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Southern Command are instructing Bolivia’s Minister of Defense and Armed Forces to suppress protests and social mobilizations.

Although progressives are rightly concerned about US-coerced compromises and concessions, it is equally important to understand the resilience and continuing successes of Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution. Focusing only on the half-empty aspect of the proverbial glass obscures the strength of the resistance and conceals the vulnerabilities of the imperial juggernaut. On a delegation to Venezuela, the constant refrain from both high-ranking government officials and grassroots Chavistas – supporters of the movement led by former President Hugo Chávez – was that they were urgently “buying time.”

South Koreans Condemn US Attempts To Undermine Judicial Sovereignty

96 South Korean members of parliament, belonging to different political parties, wrote a joint letter condemning what they called US attempts to interfere in the country’s domestic affairs and “infringe on its judicial sovereignty.” The US has reportedly been increasing pressure on the country to drop an ongoing investigation against Coupang, a US-based company which dominates the South Korean e-commerce market, over the leak of sensitive personal data of over 33 million Koreans. The lawmakers announced, in a press conference at the National Assembly in Seoul on Tuesday, April 28, that the letter would be submitted to the US embassy in the city on the same day, The Korean Times reported.

Trump Now Threatens Cuba, Venezuela Responds

In a new threat against a sovereign state, US President Donald Trump declared on Sunday that Cuba will no longer receive oil or money from Venezuela. “No more oil or money for Cuba. Zero! I strongly urge you to make a deal before it’s too late,” Trump wrote on social media. In his statement, he affirmed: “Cuba lived, for many years, on large amounts of oil and money from Venezuela. In return, Cuba provided ‘security services’ for the last two Venezuelan dictators, but not anymore!” The US ruler added that “most of those Cubans are dead from last week’s US attack, and Venezuela doesn’t need protection anymore from the thugs and extortionists who held them hostage for so many years,” and, in an attempt to make his US followers believe that the US is in control of Venezuela, claimed the US will “protect” Venezuela.

Iranians Launch Counterprotests; Reject Destabilization Attempts

Thousands of Iranians have come out into the streets for counterprotests rejecting foreign interference, violence against security forces, and vandalism of public property. Footage on social media showed scores of citizens carrying Iranian flags and chanting “Death to America” in Hamedan province, where a police officer was assaulted by rioters the night before. Counter-protesters also took to the streets of Iran’s Fars province. Citizens chanted slogans condemning “the acts of sabotage carried out by some elements in the country, taking advantage of the peaceful protests,” while rejecting “any form of violence or sabotage, and their commitment to legal and peaceful channels of expression for legitimate demands,” according to Al Mayadeen.

Trump has succeeded in closing the door to progressive government and in all likelihood his preferred neoliberal candidate – previously trailing in many opinion polls – will be declared president when the count eventually finishes. While Washington’s aversion to foreign interference in its domestic elections verges on paranoia, the gross hypocrisy which runs through its foreign policy leaves it free of any compunction when meddling in other countries’ elections, especially in Latin America.

Trump’s gunboat diplomacy in the Caribbean grabs the headlines, while quieter moves to destabilize other progressive Latin American governments go unnoticed by corporate media. A key case is a plot that would create chaos enabling a neoliberal candidate to be declared victor, with Washington’s connivance, in Honduras’s elections on November 30. At stake is four more years of progressive government or – otherwise – returning to the neoliberalism that prevailed after the US-backed military coup in 2009. The electoral defeat of progressive parties in Ecuador and Bolivia earlier this year, and the uncertain chances of progressive candidate Jeannette Jara in Chile’s elections this month and next, mean that Honduras is a crucial test.

Just one month before the November 30 vote for a new President of Honduras, as reported by Progressive International, leaked recordings unveiled a plot to manipulate logistics on election day, create chaos, and invite the US embassy to declare someone other than Rixi Moncada as the victor. Moncada, the governing party candidate, is leading by 14 percentage points in recent polls. As the government applies the Constitution to protect the votes of the Honduran people, it finds itself obliged to take measures that are easily criticized if viewed out of context.

“While claiming to support the Haitian people, [the United States] has significantly cut foreign aid and continued to deport Haitian immigrants under the pretext of national priorities, just when Haiti urgently needs support,” Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), said on Monday, April 21, at the Security Council. “What is even more shocking is that … they also recently extended their so-called 10% basic tariff to Haiti, one of the least developed countries in the world,” the Chinese ambassador continued. Geng said China is deeply concerned about the “worsening crisis in Haiti and the rampant gang violence, the near collapse of the state and the desperate situation of the people.”

ICJ President ‘Plagiarised 32 Percent Of Pro-Israel Dissenting Opinion’

Fresh allegations have emerged of Julia Sebutinde, acting president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), appearing to plagiarise large sections of her dissenting opinion on Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Last month, Sebutinde, who arguably holds the most prestigious judicial position, was accused of directly lifting sentences almost word for word in her dissenting opinion written on 19 July. A study seen by Middle East Eye compiled by Majd Abuamer, a Palestinian researcher at the Doha Institute, for an upcoming book by US scholar Norman Finkelstein has now alleged that “at least 32 percent of Sebutinde’s dissent was plagiarised”.

There is no other Western source giving any of this detail — not even that it is directly unconstitutional for a present or former head of the Armed Forces to become president in Lebanon.
