Iran’s Strikes Rewrite Washington’s West Asia Doctrine

To riff on Bruce Springsteen’s ‘My Hometown’: “Tehran says ‘These bases are going, boys / And they ain’t coming back / To your hometown’.” The Washington Post’s 6 May 2026 article, ‘Iran has hit far more US military assets than reported, satellite images show,’ was an overdue admission – based on leaks from the US Department of Defense (DOD) and Washington's intelligence community – that Iran had inflicted significant damage to US assets. However, The Post only tells part of the story. The Post examined 109 of the hundreds of satellite images published by Iranian media, whose authenticity could be verified “by comparing them with lower-resolution imagery from the European Union’s satellite system, Copernicus, as well as high-resolution images from Planet where available.”

Military bases, especially foreign ones — current and sought — generate wars. The United States has used its bases in Latin America and the Caribbean to attack Venezuela, while threatening to take over Greenland to build more bases there. Iran is bordered by seven nations with U.S. bases. The nations to the south and east of China are packed with U.S. bases, as is Europe, as is Israel. Africa has foreign bases from several empires. Russia is making more use of its bases in Belarus. On February 23, 1903, the United States took over Guantanamo from Cuba. It has never restored it. People across Latin America have used this date to organize events opposing bases, militarism, and the Monroe Doctrine.

Repression Of Protests Continues In Panama

On July 5, nearly 800 people from 17 countries signed a letter addressed to the president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, calling for international observation due to the increasing repression of protests in Panama. The document, signed by academics, artists, activists, workers, and trade unionists, also points out that the Central American country is witnessing growing criminalization of political dissent, which, according to the document, is reminiscent of the darkest years in its national history. Furthermore, the letter adds that the government is demonstrating an “authoritarian drift”.

Resistance to the Imperialist project in the West Asia (Middle East) region has deep historical and cultural roots for the people of the region. It was never exclusive to any religion; it was linked to an Arab identity and civilisation. The modern-day dominance of an Islamic Resistance is a phenomenon that is relatively recent and should not be seen through a sectarian lens, as it remains inclusive of all sects and ideologies. Religion and culture have historically encouraged a path to justice, defence of territorial integrity, regional identity, and human dignity.

Panamanian Government Declares State Of Emergency In Bocas Del Toro

The declaration of a state of emergency in the banana-producing region comes in the context of a series of mass protests as part of a national strike that began in April. The strike was called for by trade unions and social organizations to protest a pension reform law (Law 462), which reduces the amount of money retirees receive and opens the door to the privatization of social security; the security agreements between Washington and Panama which, among other things, could involve the installation of several US military bases; and to protest the possible reopening of a mining megaproject that sparked major controversy in the Central American country a few years ago. The protests have been carried out by unions, student associations, teachers, doctors, and other social groups.

All eyes were on US President Donald Trump last week during his tour of the Gulf Arab states, with many hoping that his trip would speed up Gaza ceasefire talks and bring a permanent truce in the war-torn enclave. While the ceasefire is still out of reach, the trip proved to be one of Trump’s most lucrative business journeys ever. Trump’s first major overseas trip in his second presidential term started on Tuesday, May 13 and ended on Friday, May 16, during which he visited three Gulf oil-producing countries, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dr. Saeed Dhiyab the General-Secretary of the Jordanian Democratic Popular Unity Party (Wihda Party) criticized the heads of the Gulf Arab countries who hosted Trump.
