We Live In A Society That Pays Men More When They Have Kids, But Women Less

While having children often leads to less pay for mothers, fatherhood leads to an increase: Men with children typically earn more than both women — with or without kids — and men without children. This parenthood paradox, at least in part, may be responsible for maintaining the gender pay gap, which has been consistent for 20 years. Gender stereotypes around parents are so deeply embedded into American work culture that they have had a significant impact in not just how mothers are treated in the workplace, but in how employers compensate fathers, according to a new study of census data by the Pew Research Center, released Wednesday.

People Working for Minimum Wage Can’t Afford Rent In The US

Taking into account local minimum wage rates, the average minimum-wage worker would have to put in nearly 97 hours per week (more than two full-time jobs) to afford a modest two-bedroom rental, or 79 hours per week (nearly two full-time jobs) to afford a one-bedroom apartment.

Wage Inequality Continues To Rise As Racial And Gender Disparities Persist

Wage growth was strongest for the highest-wage workers while median hourly wages grew just 1.0% last year, according to a new EPI report. State of Working America Wages 2019 details the most recent hourly wage trends through 2019, showing that large gaps by gender, race, wage, and education level remain—and some of these gaps are increasing.
