January 10, 2024 - It’s been exactly thirty years today. Three decades now separate us from an event that marked the end of the previous century. On 1 January 1994, the very day that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Mexico and Canada came into force, a few thousand Indigenous Mayans from the state of Chiapas in south-east Mexico, armed with old rifles, “declared war” on the federal army and “dictator” Carlos Salinas. Their spokesperson, Subcomandante Marcos, one of the survivors of the core group of Guévarist academic revolutionaries, had entered the region clandestinely ten years earlier to create the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) and “ignite the revolution”.

By Hilary Klein in Truth Out - In the 1980s, outsiders dressed as doctors or teachers arrived in Araceli and Maribel's jungle community and began asking the peasants why they were paid such low prices when they sold their coffee or corn. These outsiders talked about the fundamental injustices between rich and poor, and about the mistreatment their indigenous community had endured for more than five hundred years. They said that women had rights too. Villagers like Araceli and Maribel took a risk and joined "the organization." They attended secret meetings at night and recruited their neighbors. Some left home to live in the mountains and become insurgents - joining a scrappy indigenous army that was growing in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.

By The Zapatista Army For National Liberation in Rabble - These days, every time that this thing they call the "electoral process" happens, we hear and see the stuff that comes out saying that the EZLN calls for abstention, that the EZLN says that people shouldn't vote. They say this and other idiocies, these big-headed people who don't study history or even try to understand. And they even put these absurdities into history books and biographies, and then charge for them. That is to say, they charge for these lies. Like politicians. Of course, you know that we're not interested in these things that those above make up in order to try to convince those below that they’re concerned about them. As Zapatistas, we don't call for people not to vote, nor do we call for them to vote. As Zapatistas, every time we get the chance we tell people that they should organize to resist and to struggle for what they need.
