Trump claims deal with Tehran nearing ‘final stages’

Hebrew reports have indicated major Israeli concern over reports that a potential MoU will keep Iran’s allies, nuclear program, and ballistic missiles intact.

US “obstruction” is delaying the finalization of a potential agreement between Washington and Tehran, Iranian media reported on 24 May, hours after US President Donald Trump claimed a “peace” deal was close.

“Dispute between Iran and the US over one or two clauses of the possible memorandum of understanding continues, and due to American obstruction, the matter has not yet been finalized,” sources told Tasnim News Agency.

“Iran emphasizes the realization of the rights of its people, and this issue has been communicated to the Pakistani mediator, and if the US continues to obstruct, there is no possibility of finalizing the memorandum of understanding,” the sources added.

The report came as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that no decisions would be made without the approval of the Supreme National Security Council and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Sources also denied to Reuters on Sunday that Iran has agreed to hand over its enriched uranium.

According to Fars News Agency, the US claims that the Hormuz will return to its pre-war status does “not reflect reality.”

Hours earlier, Trump claimed a memorandum of “peace” between Washington and Tehran is close to being finalized, despite media reports indicating deep disagreements and significant Israeli concern.

Trump said on Truth Social that he held a “very good call” with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, and Turkiye “concerning the Islamic Republic of Iran, and all things related to a Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE.”

“An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed. Separately, I had a call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, which, likewise, went very well,” the president went on to claim.

He also said “final aspects” are being discussed and that an agreement will be “announced shortly.”

Additionally, he claimed the Strait of Hormuz will be opened. At the same time, Trump is threatening to bomb Iran again, saying he has a right to do so while claiming the draft deal includes the removal of enriched uranium from the country.

Reports indicate the draft agreement includes many of the points that Washington had initially rejected.

Ali Hashem reported for Amwaj Media, citing Arab and Iranian sources, that the draft circulating includes “an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, the release of several billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets, the lifting of the US naval blockade, and the withdrawal of American forces from the immediate vicinity of Iran.”

The parties would then discuss nuclear issues over a 30-day negotiation period “with the possibility of an extension of talks by mutual agreement.” This period will cover issues like enrichment and uranium stockpiles.

Iran’s ballistic missile program and the Axis of Resistance are reportedly excluded from the draft. A cap on the missile program and “halting support for proxies” had initially been among the key US-Israeli demands at the start of the war.

One annex reportedly covers the release of $12 billion in frozen Iranian funds, primarily facilitated by Qatar.

Major disagreements remain, however, over control and management of the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran insists is an Iranian-Omani matter.

According to the report, Israel and some US regional allies are uneasy because the framework eases pressure on Iran without dismantling the Axis of Resistance.

“This is a very worrying development from Israel’s perspective,” sources told Israeli newspaper Maariv. “The concern is about an agreement that gives Iran time, money, and regional quiet, without a real dismantling of its nuclear and terrorist capabilities.”

“The Lebanese aspect is also a cause for serious concern … Israel fears that this clause will effectively establish a reality in which Hezbollah ends the campaign while maintaining its military power and political status in Lebanon, without a significant dismantling of its capabilities,” Maariv added.
