Why the Capitalist Elite Love Mass Incarceration

Print Friendly

In this clip from Acronym TV’s full program, to discuss a planned month of Resistance To Mass Incarceration, Carl Dix breaks the war on drugs and the war on crime as proxy wars for the war on black, Latino, and oppressed people.

This war, according to Dix, has been going on for decades amongst a backdrop of are the globalization of industry. With production moved from the United States to many other parts of the world where they can find workers that they can exploit much more viciously in much worse conditions and pay them much less than they could here generating more profit for the people who run this country, that leave generations of young people with no legitimate ways to survive and raise families, and Incarceration becomes the program for dealing with that.

Well said, and with state’s entering into contract that guarantee 90% occupancy for 20 years it makes all the issues you raise worse. Not only is there money to be made — but you can’t lose the money you invest. A win-win for the investors are loss for everyone else caught up in the trap.

I think that completely misses the point. Apart from a small cottage industry that really only amounts to 3-5% of the total number of prison inmates that are housed in for-profit corrections centers, America does NOT lock people up for profit. That’s not how it works. They lock people up because they have no use for whole sections of the population, and from the point of view of the ruling class, it’s better to lock people up and have them under total control than let them start thinking about making revolution. Carl Dix makes the argument here and elsewhere that mass incarceration is like a pre-emptive counterinsurgency by the capitalist class against the people in this society who have nothing to lose but their chains. The capitalists will maintain that system whether or not they make a thin dime off of it, and in actual fact, they do it at a loss.
