On Wednesday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released the results of a study detailing massive, systemic failures among mortgage servicers which have led to wrongful foreclosures and evictions. Attorney General Eric Holder also announced plans to file new cases stemming from the foreclosure crisis. The Home Defenders League issued the following statement in response:
“Today’s revelations by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau come as no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to the foreclosure crisis—and is especially no surprise to the hundreds of thousands of homeowners who have been illegally foreclosed on as a result of bank error or fraud,” said Cammy Depew, a homeowner and member of the Home Defenders League from Gonzales, Lousiana.
“Five years after the beginning of the housing crisis, the big banks are still up to their same tactics. Foreclosures continue, mortgage servicer errors and fraud remain unchecked, and families are still losing their homes. Two months ago, hundreds of homeowners marched on the Department of Justice to call on Attorney General Eric Holder and President Obama to do their jobs and hold the banks accountable for their role in the housing crisis. Today, the Attorney General finally announced ‘significant’ action against the banks. However, the time for words is long past—it’s time for the Administration to stand up to Wall Street and prosecute the banks for the wrongdoings that cost millions of Americans their homes.”
