As our government cracks down on freedom of information, overclassified millions of documents each year and pursues rampant whistleblower prosecutions using the outdated Espionage Act of 1917, it’s become increasingly clear that a mass movement is needed to reclaim the democratic principles on which the U.S. was founded. Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning did a brave and selfless thing when she showed the public the truth about our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

What’s hormone replacement therapy? How will it affect her case? How do I talk to people about this? How can I be a better ally to Chelsea? Following her trial last summer, Chelsea Manning wrote a letter to President Obama explaining that she released documents because of her deep concern about human rights abuses in Iraq and Afghanistan. She used heartfelt words to request the President to grant her clemency. Outrageously, the White House responded that it won’t answer Chelsea’s request for executive clemency until after her appeals process, which could take years.
President Obama needs to hear from us that this policy isn’t acceptable. Let’s gather outside the White House on Sunday, May 11th in order to deliver two important messages: The outrageous prosecutions against whistleblowers must stop. And Obama must honor his promise to support government transparency by granting Chelsea Manning clemency immediately!
