Geneva – On Saturday, 06/11, La Via Campesina began its mobilizations against the 12th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization that is underway in Geneva this week.
An international delegation of peasants – representing social movements, peasant and indigenous organizations and farm unions – from the rural territories of Kenya, Korea, Paraguay, USA, France, India, Indonesia, Canada, Thailand, Spain, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Mali and Gambia took to the streets of Geneva with a massive demonstration against the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The message was loud and clear: FREE TRADE FUELS HUNGER, WTO OUT OF AGRICULTURE!
During the demonstration, peasants denounced the policies that the WTO has promoted in various countries, that has impoverished and displaced rural families through countless Free Trade Agreements that promote Industrial Agriculture and affecting the Food Sovereignty of the peoples.
All through this week La Via Campesina will participate in a series of events related to these discussions, expressing its position regarding these negotiations, as well as its commitment to trade based on the sovereignty and integration of peoples.
On Wednesday 06/15, at 11 am, the movement’s international delegation will hold a Press Conference in Geneva , where it will present an Official Press Release expressing its concerns regarding these negotiations. The activity will also be broadcast by Zoom and the social networks of La Via Campesina, more information at press@viacampesina.org.
