The mobilization to stop the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) in DC from November 14 to 18 was a great success!
Hundreds attended the arts build and training camp and many times more took to the streets. Three energetic and colorful marches and rallies over two days shut down the US Trade Representative’s Office, stopped at the White House, took over the front door of the US Chamber of Commerce, swarmed the lobby of Morgan Stanley, shut down streets and the entrance to Monsanto and performed actions of solidarity in front of embassies of TPP countries. On the third day, a group visited Congressional leaders to deliver TPP toilet paper rolls.
The National Journal reported:
For the U.S. president, it must have been tempting there in the five-star Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel, with its spectacular views of Manila Bay and its lush tropical landscaping, to momentarily forget that not everybody back home is cheering.
For 8,600 miles away, back under gray, threatening skies in Washington, there were vivid reminders that the domestic critics who condemn the TPP trade deal aren’t going to be quiet, something quite evident to the commuters stuck on roads snarled by placard-bearing protesters. Organized by a coalition of 63 organizations opposed to free-trade deals, the D.C. protests featured a blockade of the offices of the U.S. Trade Representative and a march outside the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
After a brief rest, we are ready to build the next phase!
We expect the leaders of TPP countries to sign the agreement in early February. After that, it could head to Congress if leadership believes there are enough votes.
Here are three things you can do:
1. Sign the petition to Congress (we will deliver it around the time of the signing). CLICK HERE TO SIGN.
2. Join the TPP Resistance calls. The weekly calls resume on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 9 pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific. We will discuss the next series of street actions and what people can do personally to protest the TPP. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER.
