Sharing Cities Network launched its second annual global #MapJam, a project that brings activists together across the globe by mapping shared resources in cities to help make community assets more visible through grassroots sharing projects, cooperatives, community resources and the commons.
#MapJam, which started mapping shared resources in October and November 2013, will launch on Oct. 13 with a “24-hour mapping round the world across multiple continents and time zones.” The annual event in connection with New Economy Week—seven days of action for a more sustainable world—will continue through Oct. 27 to build upon the 50 maps that were created during last year’s #MapJam launch.
“Mapping all of the shared resources in your city not only shows that another world is possible—it shows it’s already here!,” according to Occupy.com.
The project is determined to build community and bring activists together in cities around the world by “connecting the dots” and putting a new economy on the map, according to a Shared Cities Network press release. By 2015, Sharing Cities Project aims to create 100 sharing cities.
And #MapJams are easy to create—groups in Barcelona, Nairobi, Frankfurt, Hartford and Louisville have already started mapping. It’s as simple as people in cities joining together to map the shared resources, cooperatives and services in their specific city or town.
Not only are these maps “powerful organizing tools,” they provide mutual support and share movement building.
