Groups Deploy Blimp With Message To Port Of Seattle

Shell oil Screengrab

In an email the Backbone campaign wrote:

In addition to damning us with irreversible climate chaos, Arctic drilling would inevitably lead to a ecological disaster. We the People of Puget Sound say “sHell No!”to the Port of Seattle granting Shell Oil use of our public lands and the traditional lands of the Duwamish as a staging ground for Ecotrocity.

Commissioner Bill Bryant laughed off the outrage of Seattleites. Bryant smugly made light of people who were acting out of moral clarity by committing to disrupt Shell’s audacious arctic drilling scheme with their bodies and their kayaks. Well, we take that as a challenge.

SEATTLE — Groups launched an unmanned blimp over the Port of Seattle Thursday in an effort to recruit more opponents of a plan to provide space for arctic drilling equipment.

Shell’s arctic offshore drilling fleet is expected to arrive this month for storage and preparation ahead of a new round of exploratory drilling in the Chuckchi Sea.

The groups included the Backbone Campaign, 350 Seattle and Rising Tide Seattle.

The tethered blimp rose 200 feet over the port in full view of morning commuters. A banner on the sides spelled out: “sHELLNO.org. Join the Flotilla!”

Supporters on the Port Commission and labor groups say Shell’s use of the Port’s Terminal 5 will generate millions of dollars in revenue and dozens of family wage jobs. Terminal 5 is currently undergoing upgrades to prepare it for increased freight traffic.
