How did we get here? Trump wasn’t created in a vacuum. He is in fact a part of a long legacy of trigger-happy, non-transparent and largely unaccountable administrations that bolstered the military and prison industrial complexes, grew income inequality and always placed profit over people and planet. In order to effectively combat this new administration, we must broaden our view and see that the entire system is responsible, not just the latest and most grotesque orange boil on a body politic. This means making the connection between the Muslim Ban and Obama’s drone wars and Hillary Clinton’s cozy ties with the House of Saud. It means recognizing the upshot in deportations under Obama that Trump is perpetuating. It means recognizing the role of the Democrats as allies for the system, not the people. It means recognizing that the tenets of hate, greed and injustice so overtly represented by this new administration are American traditions – traditions that the system can not reform.
Trump didn’t come out of nowhere – neither did his supporters. We take a look at the legacy that wrought Trump and how policies put in place long before today only aid in spreading hate, fear and oppression – both at home and overseas.
