The United States Social Forum International Committee encourages movements and organizations from across the US to attend and participate in the 12th edition of the World Social Forum, which will be held this year from August 9 – 14 in Montreal, Canada. This is the first time in the WSF 15 year history that the Forum will be held in a country in the Global North.
For 15 years since its founding in Brazil in 2001, the WSF has been the largest global gathering of social movements, NGOs and grassroots organizations coming together to network and strategize and to develop plans of action and collaboration in the effort to build a united global movement for “Another Possible World” without war, exploitation, poverty, climate injustice and exclusion.
In the midst of the ongoing crisis in capitalism, the increasing social, economic and environmental destruction ravaging our communities, the rising inequality, dispossession and exclusion of masses of the world’s population here and abroad, and the attacks on democracy and the growth of fascism in the U.S. and around the world, it becomes even more critical that we come together as social movements to network, organize and strategize to fight for our survival as a planet and as a people.
As U.S. Social Forum organizers and as movement participants from across the United States, we strongly encourage all of those who can to consider attending this historic World Social Forum in Montreal this summer.
This World Social Forum offers us as movements in the U.S a unique opportunity to participate in the WSF in greater numbers than usual, and to highlight the conditions and our movements in the U.S., since part of the reason for this “first World Social Forum in the North” is to show that in the Global North, our class is also suffering from capitalism and fighting for Another Urgent and Possible World.
