On November 30, the leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada plan to sign the renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now called the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), during the G-20 Meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is the last date that the agreement can be signed by the outgoing right-wing Mexican President Peña Nieto before the new president takes office.
The new NAFTA2 continues the model of trade agreements rigged for the benefit of corporations and the detriment of workers and the environment. It also includes some provisions found within the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which was stopped in 2016. Read more about NAFTA2 here.
The Trump administration is expected to try to rush NAFTA2 through Congress early in 2019 using the fast track process, which prevents Congress from changing the agreement in any way and forces an up or down vote on it within 90 days. This does not provide time for reading and understanding the agreement, much less holding debates on the content.
The broad coalition of people and organizations who worked together to stop the TPP will need to act quickly to stop NAFTA2. We must send a message to the administration and Congress that we will not allow this model of trade to continue any longer. We need trade agreements that protect communities from abusive corporations, raise wages and safety for workers and protect the planet.
