‘Cancel the Rents’ Car Caravans Protest In 40 Cities

From Los Angeles to San Francisco to Chicago to New York and more than 40 cities across the country. On April 25 cars rolled through neighborhoods and shopping districts, stopped in front of jails, and drove by the homes of local politicians to demand that all rents and mortgages be canceled. Every car caravan took extensive precautions to conform to physical distancing requirements.

Here is some of the national press coverage of the socialist-led protests demanding the cancellation of rents and mortgages for the duration of the pandemic from Liberation News.

Liberation News reports: “The fightback has begun! It’s perverse that the government, after shutting down the whole economy, won’t now cancel rents and mortgages. Make the bailed-out banks absorb the cost. The buildings won’t collapse, but millions of unemployed families will if they’re forced to pay.”

Car protests took place in over 40 cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno (California); Seattle, Spokane, Vancouver and Pasco (Washington state); Salt Lake City, Provo and Cedar Springs (Utah); Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, (Texas); Denver, Colorado Springs (Colorado); Milwaukee and Madison, (Wisconsin); Albany and Queens, (New York); Dayton and Cincinnati, (Ohio); Albuquerque, New Mexico; Anchorage, Alaska; Atlanta, Georgia;  Boise, Idaho; Boston, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; Columbia, South Carolina; Jackson, Mississippi, Knoxville Tennessee;  Manchester, New Hampshire; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Newark, New Jersey. New Haven, Connecticut; Reno, Nevada; and Springfield, Missouri.

National Petition to Cancel all Rents and Mortgages

President Donald Trump:

People all across the United States are experiencing the most unimaginable and devastating crisis of COVID-19. More than 26 million people have lost their jobs, millions more stand to lose their incomes in weeks and months to come. One of the most critical issues is housing.

The CARES Act and other Congressional bills are not nearly enough to address this massive crisis. Hospitals don’t have enough resources. A one time $1200 payment for individuals does not go far enough and too many people are excluded from the benefits altogether.

At least 30 percent of renters were unable to pay their rent on April 1st. The rent moratoriums implemented in several states will require that the rent be paid at some point in the future but with the loss of jobs and cuts to income, many will be unable to pay a debt so large.

Housing and utilities are an absolute necessity for every human being, especially during the life-and-death struggle against COVID-19. No one should lose their housing for any reason in this crisis! The rent and mortgage including for small businesses must be canceled during this crisis.
