NYC Shut It Down (a.k.a. Grand Central Crew) is a NYC-based direct action organization in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
We are the organizers of the weekly #PeoplesMonday protests that honor a different victim of police violence every week. We demand an end to unaccountable police violence and criminalization of daily life.
Every Monday since January NYC Shut It Down has taken to the streets of NYC, forcing attention to the ever-growing Black Lives Matter movement and the struggle for Black liberation. Through our weekly#PeoplesMonday actions, NYC Shut It Down highlights different cases of police brutality against people of color. Some stories, like those of Sean Bell, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice are highly publicized. Other stories receive little to no media attention. It is our duty to amplify these stories and we need your help to do that!
All money raised through our GoFundMe page goes directly to #PeoplesMonday actions, helping pay for such things as paint for our portraits of victims, signs displaying the facts of each case, and Metrocards for some of our financially strapped members who sometimes cannot attend protests because they can’t afford the MTA’s increasing fares. Your contributions will help ensure that #PeoplesMonday actions continue weekly and that the fight for Black lives never stops. Until we get justice, there can be no peace.

They are funding their work through a crowd funding campaign. They describe how the funds will be used to “take the message to the streets.”
“We seek funding from those who support the #BlackLivesMatter movement and value direct action groups like ours who take the message to the streets.
“Your donations to NYC Shut It Down will be spent on the operational costs of organzing weekly direct actions: meeting spaces, transportation, secure communications, materials for artwork, banners & informatinal material, and legal expenses.
“We are an all-volunteer organization, so every dollar you donate to NYC Shut It Down will be spent directly on these crucial elements of our direct action campaigns to end police violence.”
