Climate Activists Demonstrate At FERC Calling For No Gas Exports

No MVP approval, no new fossil fuel infrastructure!

Washington, DC, — Activists and frontline leaders against fossil fuels rallied outside the headquarters of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) this morning.

The Biden Administration has put a one year pause on any approvals by the Department of Energy of permits for LNG export terminals in the Gulf South, as they assess what is the “public interest” regarding these massive and destructive fossil fuel projects. But FERC, the other federal agency that must approve permits for LNG export terminals, has not yet taken similar action.

Activists also called on FERC to reject the Mountain Valley Pipeline’s request to go into service on the same day (May 23) given major widespread safety issues. Two weeks ago, during a hydrostatic test, a section of the pipeline ruptured,

Local farmer and impacted landowner Maury Johnson said “There are at least 70 places where the pipeline had to undergo repair after hydrostatic testing. This testing is not yet finished so Frontline community members are out actively looking into other places where pipe failures have occurred.”

John Beard, the CEO of the Port Arthur Community Action Network (PACAN) said “It is hoped that FERC does not approve the proposed Port Arthur Pipeline, as the environmental, human rights implications clearly point out that the rights of impacted peoples are being ignored. It is not in the ‘public’, nor national interest to subject our own citizens with more pollution, land seizure…and death. Yes, people are DYING from the ‘phase UP’ of fossil exports!

Environmental justice, HUMAN RIGHTS aren’t considered, only the push for more exports, more profits, at “our” expense. The solution is simple…just say, or vote “No”.

Juan Mancias, Tribal Chair, Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas said “The only vote that should be on at this hearing should be a “no” vote. Any other decision is a violation of article 9 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. By supporting permits you promote slavery and undue arresting of humans for standing up for their rights. Corporations are the plantations and politicians and bureaucrats are the house servants to their crimes against humanity. Do not perpetuate the sacrifice zones without human rights policies. Do your due diligence setup policies that include input from the grassroots.”

RL Miller, Director of Climate Hawks Vote Civic Action said “Climate hawks are deeply concerned about the risks of placing the Mountain Valley Pipeline into service too soon. Because the project is years behind schedule, the pipe has been exposed to the elements for years, raising serious questions about the integrity of the pipeline and the safety of nearby communities. The recent failure of a hydrostatic test on Bent Mountain WV is further proof that the MVP is Unsafe for operation. Today we’re delivering more than 3400 comments to FERC calling for Commissioners to deny MVP’s request to be put in-service, and we join our colleagues in calling for them to end all fossil fuel permits, permanently.”

Bekah Hinojosa from the South Texas Environmental Justice Network said “FERC has repeatedly ignored the detrimental climate and environmental justice impacts of the proposed Rio Grande LNG, Texas LNG, and Rio Bravo Pipeline projects. These LNG terminals would be the biggest polluters in our low-income Latine and Indigenous community, which is already negatively impacted by border wall construction and explosive SpaceX rockets.”
