CONVERGE ON MAULES CREEK (AN ONGOING CAMPAIGN)
The time to step up is now.
Construction has now begun on the Maules Creek Coal Mine in central New South Wales, with bulldozers destroying parts of the Leard State Forest.
As the bulldozers have moved in though, campaigners from all around the country have joined hands with the local community to stop the construction. Protesters have started a blockade of the entrance to the mine, turning back vehicles seeking to clear the forest for construction of rail infrastructure.
We need your help however to keep this going.
If you are free now, we need your help straight away to help build the initial blockade. If you are new to this type of action, then join us on the January long weekend – when hundreds will converge to learn about the forest, the campaign and how to stop the destruction. Training and preparation will start from January 25, leading to a large peaceful action on January 28.
Get involved now!
If you can head to the camp now please do so. Get in contact and we’ll give you the details of how to get there.
Long weekend convergence:
When: 25 – 28 January
Where: Leard State Forest blockade camp, Leard Forest Road.
What: Over 100 people joining together for training, planning, workshops and peaceful action to stop the mine.
If you have been to Leard State Forest over the last four years, if you love biodiversity, if you think community health and cultural heritage should be protected from coal mines, if you want action on climate change, if you think the coal industry has gone too far … be part of this historic moment.
What do I need to bring? Please come with everything you need to camp self-sufficiently, including water, food and equipment. You will need a tent and sleeping bag, camping mat, torch and cooking and eating equipment if you have it. It is likely to be very hot, so make sure you bring a water bottle, sunscreen, appropriate clothing for the sun, and a hat.
About the campaign:
350 Australia will be working with groups across New South Wales to stop the proposed Maules Creek Coal Mine. The mine will cause the destruction of 1600 hectares of unique bushland and farmland, 700 hectares of which is classified as critically endangered. It will pump thousands of tons of coal dust onto neighboring communities, drain the water table and release approximately 30 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year – almost the annual emissions of New Zealand’s entire energy sector.
Construction of the mine is due to begin at the end of 2013 and 350 Australia will be joining in to do everything we can to stop it from going ahead. Sign up to find out more!
