The Prime Minister is breaking his first big climate promise.
Prime Minister Trudeau and his party promised to include climate change and to respect community voices – especially First Nations – in pipeline reviews. Now, just weeks after taking office, they are breaking that promise and refusing to suspend or cancel the reviews of the Energy East and Trans-Mountain pipelines.
The Plan
If the NEB reviews of the Energy East and Kinder Morgan Trans-Mountain pipelines are not cancelled or suspended by January 15th, people and groups across Canada will take action to hold the Prime Minister and this government accountable to their own election promises.
In order to organize in a broad, inclusive manner, have developed six principles for organizing People’s Injunction actions. Any group who wants to participate in the People’s Injunction can organize an action following these principles.
- Actions will be organized in as open and collaborative a manner as possible.
- Actions will follow the leadership already being demonstrated by Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities. Organizers will work to align actions and messaging with that leadership whenever possible.
- Actions will be bold and creative. In our actions we will not direct violence – verbal or physical – towards any person and will not engage in intentional property destruction that distract from the goals of stopping the reviews.
- Actions will respect our allies who choose to participate in the NEB process and focus on holding the Prime Minister and this government accountable to their promises. Therefore our actions will not prevent our allies from participating in or testifying at NEB hearings and will use creative, bold tactics to pressure the decision makers with the power to stop the reviews.
- Organizers will take responsibility for their actions and any resulting consequences.
- Actions will cease if the reviews of the Energy East and Trans-Mountain pipelines are suspended or cancelled.
We do not take a stance on tactics that other groups choose to use in their circumstance but are unable to support actions as part of the People’s Injunction strategy that do not follow these principles.
