Send a to President Obama, Secretary Moniz: withdraw the loan offer for nuclear power plants in Georgia
Nearly four years ago–in February 2010–President Obama announced that the Department of Energy would make an $8.3 Billion taxpayer loan to Southern Company and its partners for construction of two new nuclear reactors at the Vogtle site in Georgia.
That loan still has not been granted. Why? Because the utilities want a sweetheart deal that would put all the risk on the taxpayers. And the White House’s Office of Management and Budget has refused to go along.
The deadline to complete this loan has been extended numerous times and is now this Friday, January 31, 2014. Even if you’ve acted before, raise your voice again now.
It’s time for the Department of Energy to withdraw this loan offer. Please tell Energy Secretary Moniz to stop this loan now.
To make sure Washington hears us, your letter will also go to President Obama, the DOE’s loan guarantee office, and your members of Congress.
You may get some inspiration from this op-ed published January 21 from veteran energy journalist Kennedy Maize. Why should U.S. taxpayers subsidize electricity rates for ratepayers of a few Georgia municipal utilities? He doesn’t get it. Neither do we. Act now.
