4G HotSpots & Service 4 #CitizenMedia Journalists
Financially bandwidth cost is one of the highest costs for volunteer citizen media participants. Under normal data plans, a live-streamer broadcasting street actions, and events ends up with 100s of dollars of data charges per month, setting up a portable media center for a longer term action or an occupation could become prohibitively expensive very quickly.
By affiliation with a non profit, we can provide unlimited 4g hotspots on the sprint network for 120/year (plus $100 cost of the hotspot) which will liberate our fellow activists to tell their story to the world without these cost barriers.
Ability for activists to do real time reporting of actions, to broadcast what’s happening in real time and to amplify the signal from the streets is essential
Global Revolution TV through in coordination with DeepDish TV, our fiscal sponsor have distributed dozens of unlimited wimax hotspots to citizen journalists over the last 5 years. We were working through Mobile Citizen to acquire them – which provided very low cost wimax connectivity to non profits by leasing spectrum that it was assigned by the FCC to Clear corp in exchange for very affordable rate, However, Sprint bought Clear and is shutting down the Wimax network to use it for its 4G LTE business, and was planning to just cut off all of Mobile Citizen customers. Mobile Citizen sued Sprint, and they just reached a settlement which at this point allows to roll the existing contracts over and use a much faster 4g network.
We want to roll over up to 20 hotspots which are outstanding right now before the February 3rd deadline when the WiMax network gets turned off, These devices will provide bandwidth for livestreamers covering the unfolding black lives matter actions as well as people organizing against deportations and for immigrant righs. They will be used to setup mobile media centers at upcoming occupations and longer term actions – and they will allow us to keep working to deliver the voices from the streets not censored by main stream media.
Our cost will be $220 per hotspot and year of service, and we are budgeting having to replace 7 hotspots over the next year as they break, get seized by the police or lost after being deployed all over the country.
