Bemidji, MN: Water Protectors Lock To Enbridge Office Gates, Work Halted

Bemidji, MN — In the early morning, 6 water protectors locked to the gates of a key Enbridge office in Bemidji, MN in protest of proposed tar sands pipeline project Line 3. 2 chained their necks to the gate, risking personal safety for the hundreds of watersheds Enbridge proposes to send nearly 1M barrels of tar sands from Alberta through on its way to the shores of Lake Superior. Enbridge responded by closing its office for the day.

Sharing Black History One Story At A Time: Festival Reaches 27 Years

Minneapolis, MN – The Black Storytellers Alliance (BSA) finished its 27th year of showcasing Black master storytellers from around the United States with a weekend of free events for the “Signifyin’ & Testifyin’” festival in late 2018. Vusumuzi Zulu, the director of the Black Master Storytelling Festival, told Unicorn Riot that storytelling is “one of the most powerful ways to transmit culture“, history, and traditions. Unicorn Riot livestreamed the grand finale event of the three day festival and spoke with the festival director and five master storytellers (videos further below).

State Regulators Postpone Enbridge Meetings After Protests Erupt

The Minneapolis Public Utilities commissioners, meeting in June. The PUC on Tuesday postponed a meeting disrupted by protesters as the panel was to consider the Enbridge 3 new pipeline proposal. State regulators on Tuesday postponed a meeting on Enbridge's controversial new $2.6 billion oil pipeline project after protests erupted in the hearing room. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) was evaluating whether Enbridge met conditions imposed by the panel in June in regard to the pipeline project, which would replace the company's current Line 3. The conditions, which must be met for the company to receive its permit, include details of Enbridge's corporate guarantee and insurance coverage in case of an oil spill.

By Camille Erickson for TC Daily Planet - “We can’t keep using the bodies of youth as the only tool for resistance,” Me’Lea Connelly, executive director of the Association of Black Economic Power (ABEP) said, “we need something else.” In the wake of the killing of Jamar Clark on Nov. 15, 2015 and the ensuing Fourth Precinct occupation, followed less than a year later by the killing of Philando Castile on July 6, 2016, Connelly recalled a drive for a concerted effort with movement organizers to diversify tactics of resistance against police brutality. A meeting was called, and after hours of conversation with a cross section of community, the group voted to create Minnesota’s only Black-led financial institution in North Minneapolis. A symbiotic relationship exists between ABEP and Blexit. Connelly described Blexit as the incubator and nest where ideas put forth by the community are percolated. ABEP puts them into action. The ABEP Executive Committee composed of – Connelly, Brett Grant, Ron Harris, Amber Jones, Danielle Mkali, Felicia Perry and Y. Elaine Rasmussen – are leading the effort to build the foundations of the credit union while still remaining deeply grounded in the conceptions of resistance movement.

Minneapolis Slams Escalation Of War On Afghanistan, Demands “Hands Off Korea”

By Staff of Fight Back News - Minneapolis. MN - With only 24 hour’s notice, Minneapolis peace groups organized an emergency response protest against the use a massive U.S. bomb in Afghanistan. Over 60 people joined the protest held on Friday, April 14. Several people just walking by or waiting for their bus stopped and joined the protest. People in cars, trucks and buses passing by waved and honked in support of the anti-war message. On Thursday, April 13, it was reported that the Trump administration and the Pentagon unleashed the most powerful U.S. bomb – the 20,000 pound GBU-43, referred to as the ‘mother of all bombs.’ The weapon was used in Afghanistan. Twin Cities anti-war groups saw this as a major escalation of the U.S. wars and consulted quickly to call an emergency protest against this latest U.S. military move. Organizers also raised the alarm about the growing danger of a new U.S. war in Korea. News reports had indicated that the Trump administration had plans for an imminent attack on Korea. The protest was in the West Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis. The neighborhood has many Somali immigrant families.

Freeman said DNA and other evidence collected after the shooting on a north Minneapolis street show that Clark was not handcuffed during a scuffle with police officers Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze, and that Clark had grabbed for Ringgenberg’s gun after the officer tackled him to the ground.

Sgt. Jeffrey Rothecker, who is on paid leave from the department and is the subject of an internal affairs investigation, said he is "extremely sorry" and understood "the post was insensitive and wrong." "My poor choice of words conveyed a message I did not intend and am not proud of," Rothecker said in a statement.

Jamar Clark’s death sparked tense “Black Lives Matter” protests that fit the shooting into a longstanding pattern of police abuse in the city. At least one of the officers implicated in Clark’s death was previously “sued for police brutality by a black man who alleged that Ringgenberg had choked him,” City Pages reported.

Cars once again roll down Plymouth Avenue N. But for 18 days, it was the epicenter of demonstrations that sprouted from the fatal police shooting of Jamar Clark. With people coming and going at all hours of the day and night, it grew into a bustling tent city with hot food, portable toilets and something call the “Justice Hut.” Some people slept in shifts, going home only to shower and change clothes.

A few hundred protesters reacted by occupying the rotunda of Minneapolis City Hall for a couple of hours in the afternoon. The peaceful demonstration at City Hall moved into the street with around 100 marchers heading up Hennepin Avenue and across the river. Several groups of protesters including Black Lives Matter converged on a restaurant and bowling alley in northeast Minneapolis.

Protest leaders, however, responded with a firm "no," setting the stage for a potential clash between police and those outside the precinct building who've been demonstrating since the Nov. 15 police shooting of Jamar Clark. The standoff came on the same day the Hennepin County Attorney's Office unveiled charges tied to the Nov. 23 confrontation near the precinct station that left five wounded.

My time as an activist there, from 2006-13, has largely informed how I organize and do movement building. I knew at a lot of the people involved and was quickly on the phone. The protesters’ campaign demanded justice for Jamar Clark, an unarmed African American who was killed by Minneapolis police a week before. I knew that the protest site, the Fourth Precinct Police Station on Plymouth Avenue, had previously been the location of a storefront center for black activism named The WAY.

Flanked by city officials and several longtime North Side community leaders, the mayor reiterated her support for erasing racial disparities in the city. But she said the demonstrations sparked by the shooting death of Jamar Clark by a police officer have become a hazard for neighborhood residents, police and protesters that should be stopped.
