This Time Students Are Old Enough To Organize, Mobilize And Speak Out

Note: There has been a consensus for gun regulation for a long time. After this mass killing, will the politics be different? In this 2018 election year, perhaps mobilized voters can make a difference. The clearest support is for gun background checks as a new Quinnipiac poll finds 97 percent support such measures with two percent opposed and one percent declining to respond. “The poll also found majority support for a nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons and a mandatory waiting period for all gun purchases and other gun control proposals.” There has been a long term trend toward this consensus.  A new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows widespread frustration on guns. “Nearly six in 10 Americans believe stricter gun laws could have prevented the massacre in Florida last week, with 77 percent saying Congress isn’t doing enough to stop such shootings, and 62 percent saying the same about Trump.” Seventy-seven percent also believed better treatment of mental health could have prevented the Florida shooting.

This anger is beginning to show itself at town halls.  Some are predicting an avalanche of anger is coming at politicians over the issue. Legislators are feeling pressure that they describe as different than previous anti-gun moments. National consensus creates a tipping point and when it is combined with people being mobilized it creates unstoppable momentum for change. One risk when national consensus reaches these high levels is fake reforms by politicians who want to convince people they are being heard, give a reform the name voters want but put in place inadequate changes.
