We have just lived through a totally atypical electoral process. Since the end of the military period we did not have the imprisonment of a leader, like Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, unjustly condemned, and whose candidacy was challenged by the Superior Electoral Tribunal. A process in which forces in a presidential struggle emerged from the darkness of the country, causing a great wave of hatred and violence against the Brazilian people.
Our candidacy was a democratic response to the arbitrariness that has contaminated the political scene since the parliamentary coup that toppled President Dilma Rousseff in 2016. We faced abuses practiced by currents committed to petty anti-popular, anti-democratic and anti-national interests.
The election of Bolsonaro represents a political rupture, whose signs are represented in the assassination of Marielli Franco, Moa Katendê – Capoeirista leader, Charlione – a young man from Ceará. They threaten our lives for struggling for an equal and just country.
Even under bullets, we resisted in defense of national sovereignty, violated in so many ways in the last two years. They who are protected by sectors of the judicial system and the monopoly media. Meanwhile the candidate Bolsonaro remained free to finance his machine of lies with clandestine money, incite violence against his adversaries, flee from public debates and circumvent electoral rules.
These forces, through trickery and truculence, with maneuvers still subject to investigations and trials, reached the Presidency of the Republic.
In spite of so many obstacles, our alliance organized a powerful resistance throughout the country, which led to the realization of the second round. It is a formidable movement in defense of civilization against barbarism, democracy against dictatorship, love against hatred.
In that second round, which is closing today, men and women from all walks of life have demonstrated in the streets in favor of the constitutional pillars of our country. This journey would never have been possible, however, without the dedication and courage of social movements and democratic sectors of society.
We will continue to defend the Constitution, tolerance, for a Brazil for all. We will continue to combat the peril of dictatorship, the elimination of social progress, the sale of our vast public land, the surrender of national wealth, racism and misogyny, homophobia and the love of institutionalized violence.
In this moment, it is fundamental to continue together and with cohesion around democracy, national sovereignty and rights. Therefore, we have called for next week’s plenary sessions organized in all cities, bringing together the militancy and all those who joined in that battle. Whenever possible, we should also organize demonstrations, as already scheduled for next Tuesday, October 30th in São Paulo.
We should not fall down due to fear, because we have each other. Contrary to what they think, the Brazilian people know how to resist.
