Banksy Arrested By New York Police?

A few days ago we published an article, Bloomberg Threatens Banksy With Arrest For Public Art, that described how Mayor Bloomberg had spoken out against Banky’s public art and approved the use of police force against his “Better Out Than In” artists residency in New York.  We also included a photo array of some of Banky’s iconic art work.  Today, as reported below, a notice was put up his website saying that the exhibit for the day had been cancelled due to police activity.  The report below indicates that Banksy and two of his colleagues may have been arrested this morning.

Gothamist reported:

On Monday Banksy‘s Ronald McDonald shoe shine piece was in front of the McDonald’s on Essex and Delancey before it was eventually forced out by the NYPD, who confronted the actor playing Shine Boy (who is different from the original Shine Boy).

Sean Shapiro witnessed the scene and tells us, “About five police cars showed up with ten officers.” Well, that seems extreme! But the NYPD has been actively seeking Banksy, the NY Post bleated for his capture on their front cover, and officers have been asking building owners where Banksy has hit to file charges. Shapiro told us:

“The two in the photos approached him asking questions… one of the other officers nearby had his ticket pad out ready to go and I overheard him say that they could give him a disorderly conduct, as he was blocking sidewalk traffic and a crowd formed. The same officer was pretty knowledgeable on the meaning of the piece as he was explaining it to another officer.

The officers stood by for a while as the actor was texting and calling one of the other members of the crew and it took about five minutes before a guy [Steve Zissou-sky!] showed up to carry away the statue into a dark van.”

Here are the photos of the incident:

As noted in the comments below Untapped has updated their report.  They have added: Update: Banksy has NOT been arrested, as confirmed by NYPD in a phone call with Gothamist’s Jen Carlson.

Banksy in NYC Day 23: “Today’s Art Has Been Cancelled Due to Police Activity”, Banksy Arrested?

Bansky -- cancelled for police activity notice

Today Banksy put  up on his Instagram the message, “Today’s art has been cancelled due to policy activity.” A commenter wrote, “Friend at 79th precinct said they nabbed banksy and 2 helpers in the act this morning around 6:00 a.m. :( They have them on video at another location too.” As reported by the NY Post and other outlets over the last week, the NYPD has been “on the hunt” for Banksy. This all just reminded us of the fact that in Brazil, street art is LEGAL. In fact, the legalization of graffiti has spurred a real renaissance for street art in cities like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo where there is a strong distinction made between tagging, known as pichação, and grafite, a street art style distinctive to Brazil.

Art schools have created curriculum dedicated to street art, there was a Biennale of Graffiti Fine Art in São Paulo in 2010, and street art has become a key tool to community building in both favelas and other communities in Rio de Janeiro. Organizations such as Favela Paintingare creating self-sustaining art organizations to paint entire neighborhoods, and now an entire hillside. Most importantly perhaps, the relationship between street artists and building owners has changed significantly, to the extent that owners often commission artists for pieces, while artists ask permission from owners to paint their buildings.

In Rio de Janeiro, the street art is ubiquitous. It exists in all corners of the city from the favela to upper class neighborhoods, from residential to institutional. It is bold in scale and aesthetics, and is anything but graffiti. The integration between street art and the urban fabric in all types of areas in Rio-residential, institutional, infrastructural, touristic-and across all socioeconomic neighborhoods is clear when one walks the streets. This previous article explores the hierarchy of permission between building owner and artist, how community is being developed in Rio through street art by artists, the city and non-profits, and how the urban fabric of Rio has contributed to the flourishing street art scene.

As Banksy evades police, take a quick look at some of the amazing works being produced in Rio de Janeiro.
