Put National Single Payer Healthcare on the nation’s agenda.
We call on communities across the country to join in a National Day of Action on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
Our health care system is broken beyond repair. Insurance companies and for-profit middlemen create barriers to care and massive administrative waste. These result in unnecessary suffering and deaths. For over 60 years, piecemeal reforms have resulted in higher costs and the worst health outcomes among comparable nations.
We demand the recognition by our government that health care is a human right.
We demand the elimination of private health insurance and the banning of for-profit delivery of care.
We demand the enactment of a publicly financed, national single payer program that would provide comprehensive coverage to everyone.
We demand that health care delivery be transformed from profit-seeking ventures into services organized to serve the people of our country, a system in which all caregivers are freed from corporate control.
The National Day of Action will bring people together locally and nationally from neighborhoods, unions, faith groups, businesses, and all types of civic organizations to join the demand to remove profit from health care. We must focus our collective anger towards corporate health insurers to bring real reform: put National Single Payer on the nation’s agenda!
SIGN THE ORGANIZING STATEMENT HERE
Following the shooting in December of United Health Care CEO, Brian Thompson, the response from Americans was not your typical “sending thoughts and prayers.” The rage, frustration, and disgust directed at the “victim” surprised many. Quickly enough, it became clear why people were responding with anger and not condolences. Many recognized that the victims included people who have been wronged by a cruel, expensive, failed broken health care system. Brian Thompson symbolized an ugly, rapacious industry. It was hard to mourn its death.
Capitalizing on this rage and trying to find a way to channel righteous anger into something that could change our health care system for the better, National Single Payer published an article in Common Dreams Opinion | Improved Medicare for All Can Heal This Sick Country | Common Dreams calling for a National Day of Action mobilizing the nation to put national single payer, free from profit on the table.
We invite local organizations to endorse the statement and consider organizing a local event to support the National Day of Action on May 31, 2025.
NSP has a dedicated website page where you can read more about the need for a National Day of Action, a Google map tracking all the cities with local actions, and a toolkit for organizations interested in creating their own local action. We hope to educate, activate, and mobilize the nation for national single payer, the elimination of private health insurance, and the banning of for-profit delivery of care.
On May 31, we want people to channel their righteous anger into something non-violent and positive: the bold demand for the health care system we deserve.
