When you mine the tar sands, you get a byproduct called “pet-coke”. It’s incredibly dirty–made out of almost pure carbon, as well as contains sulfur and heavy metals. And the Koch brothers are storing huge mounds of this stuff on the shores of the Detroit River. This is extreme energy and environmental racism at some of its worst.
So, today, our friends in Detroit are marching at the Detroit river’s docks–and staying there through the night with an overnight vigil, followed by a Peoples Press Conference in the morning.
Get to the Detroit docks if you can (http://on.fb.me/16rSzUd ) and LIKE DCATS – Detroit Coalition Against Tar Sands to follow this fearless campaign!
MI March and Rally Against Dirty Energy
Sunday June 23rd 3pm-6pm
Rally in Clark Park(off Scotten Street, adjacent to Western High School)
March to Petcoke Piles off of Rosa Parks and Jefferson
This event aims to bring together all the folks across SE MI and beyond who believe its time to move beyond the exploitative dirty energy systems of the past to clean energy/local solutions and alternatives for our future. From the horrid extraction practices in Alberta, to the pipeline communities, to the refinery communities, to overseas, tar sands is inherently destructive at every phase of production. Whether folks and organizations can lend their vision and expertise who have been leading the way for decades, or this is the first time people get involved; we want this event to be open to all and co-created by a diverse group of organizations and individuals working for social change from the grassroots level.
Whether your work is to fight for access to clean air, challenge the system from a policy perspective, or protecting the water and communities affected by Pet Coke, all voices should be represented and heard at the table. This event aims to bring together people from all backgrounds to raise our collective voice to call for a new way. A time to answer the call for a R{e}volution of values like the one King called for in 67 to value people and planet over profit and things
Following the rally and march we will invite folks to stay for the overnight torchlight vigil to hold our presence and shed light on the piles until the following morning’s Peoples Press Conference.
Peoples Press Conference on Petcoke
