Former CIA Chief Brennan Running Scared

Note: In the midst of all the Russiagate allegations, President Trump called President Putin after his re-election to congratulate him. Reportedly their conversation touched on a number of issues including North Korea, Syria and Ukraine. The two presidents discussed a bi-lateral meeting “in the not-too-distant future” to discuss the arms race and other issues.

Trump said: “We had a very good call and I suspect that we will probably be meeting in the not-too-distant future to discuss the arms race, which is getting out of control, but we will never allow anybody to have anything close to what we have.” On the arms raise Putin said “Nobody plans to accelerate an arms race.”

Sputnik News reported that the Kremlin characterized the conversation as “constructive” and “focused on addressing the problems in Russia-US relations.” Sputnik reports the two presidents did not discuss allegations of Russian election meddling or the death of Sergei Skripal in the UK.

There seem to be people in the White House who do not want Trump and Putin having a constructive, positive conversation. Huffington Post reports thatIn his daily briefing his national security team told him  ‘DO NOT CONGRATULATE,’ (in capital letters). Trump did so anyway, according to a report Tuesday by The Washington Post.” Trump was also directed to talk to Putin about election meddling and the nerve agent murder in the UK. Trump discussed neither. Senator John McCain criticized Trump for congratulating a dictator for his election victory. There is a good deal of criticism of Trump talking to Putin.

We applaud Russia and the US talking and Trump and Putin meeting. There are many issues to discuss, some of which were reportedly discussed in the phone call and will be topics of a bilateral meeting, e.g. Ukraine, North Korea, Syria as well as NATO bases on the Russian border. We hope plans for a meeting advance quickly and the two leaders meet for a constructive dialogue. KZ

With former CIA Director John Brennan accusing President Donald Trump of “moral turpitude” for his “scapegoating” of Andy McCabe, it remains to be seen whether a constitutional crisis will be averted.
