Next week: Direct Actions to Save Cove Point

The next two weeks are critical in the struggle to stop construction of a liquefied fracked-gas export terminal in Cove Point, MD that threatens nearby homes, the Chesapeake Bay and the climate crisis.

We need you to join the emergency mobilization!

Sunday, November 30Nonviolent Direct Action Training from 2 to 6 pm at 12175 Southern Connector Boulevard  in Lusby, MD

Monday, December 1: Rally at “Area B” on Solomon’s Island RD near Route 4 at 6:30 am andvisibility action nearby on Route 4 at 4 pm.

Tuesday, December 2: Rally at “Area A” on Route 4/2 between Cove Point Rd and the entrance to Calvert Cliffs State Park at 6:30 am followed by a possible march.

We’ll have LED letters to spell out “Save Cove Point,” an LED banner, a large highway banner and other great banners. You are encouraged to bring handmade signs. We’ll also have chants and songs to sing.

Join the community in saving their homes and preventing a huge threat to the climate crisis. Overnight accommodations in a church will be available for those who need it.

RSVP for the training and actions to info@popularresistance.org.

BACKGROUND: The FERC issued a permit this year for the construction of a 160 foot pier to bring in large pieces of equipment for the gas export terminal, but they must finish it by December 16 or they will have to wait until late March to begin construction again.

A delay in construction is critical because this project’s permit is being challenged for failure to conduct an environmental impact study and a quantitative risk assessment. This is the first  gas export terminal being built in a residential area, which sets a dangerous precedent.

These studies were not performed because they would show that this export terminal will release tons of toxins into the air each year, generate noise pollution 24 hours a day, bring large tankers carrying explosive liquid into the Bay, put the local community at risk of a serious accident without an adequate evacuation route and will drive fracking of the Marcellus Shale which will have related impacts of more pipelines and compressor stations throughout the region.

Like the tar sands in Alberta, the Marcellus Shale is a huge carbon bomb that needs to stay in the ground!
