Alleging Double Standards.
The Nicaraguan government announced its withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in protest against the falsehoods and slanders against the country perpetrated at the institution.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 27, the Nicaraguan authorities stated that the UNHRC has become a platform for those who are attempting to destabilize Nicaragua and are the perpetrators of numerous murders, abductions, and violations of human rights of the Nicaraguan people.
The statement further stressed that the report against the Nicaraguan authorities by the self-styled group of “experts” is evidence of the double standards and politicization of the multilateral mechanisms where human rights are being weaponized.
Given these reasons, the government of Nicaragua conveyed its sovereign decision to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council.
The co-president of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, said, “For Nicaragua, these disrespectful mechanisms have lost their nature and essence. We do not recognize them, and we do not want to be part of or complicit in outrages against sovereignty, the equality of States, and the dignity of peoples… For this reason, Nicaragua conveys its sovereign and irrevocable decision to withdraw from the Human Rights Council and all activities related to this Council and all its associated mechanisms.”
She also condemned the falsifications promoted by multiple international organizations against the country.
“Today, Nicaragua, condemning all falsehoods, falsifications, slander, and lies in an act of elementary decency and fulfilling that sacred duty to preserve decorum and pride to preserve our history of courage and honorable struggle for our identity and independence… repudiate all insults, offenses, all falsifications, all aggressions, everything that constitutes the colonialist policy that governs the actions of organizations that should serve the good of all,” she stated.
The Nicaraguan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a communiqué to the Human Rights Council, highlighting that “the report of the self-styled group of experts that Nicaragua does not recognize, as well as previous reports, statements, and updates from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights are evidence of the double standards and politicization of these mechanisms that weaponize human rights, using them as a pretext to interfere in states and disrespect sovereignty.”

It also emphasized that these mechanisms are not only functioning as political platforms to discredit the work of the Republic of Nicaragua’s Government of Reconciliation and National Unity in the safeguarding of peace and security but also constitute an obstacle to the socioeconomic development of the Nicaraguan people, including their progress in education, health, housing, infrastructure, food security, energy, water, and sanitation.
