Syrian Alawites Launch General Strike

Alawites in Syria are carrying out a general strike to express their support of federalism and to protest against sectarian killings, arbitrary detentions, and kidnappings being carried out by the extremist-led government. The strike, which is planned to last for five days, has spread to large parts of the cities of Tartous, Jableh, Qardaha, Latakia, Salhab, Masyaf, Safita, and the Alawite neighborhoods in Homs. Photos circulating on social media show shuttered shops and empty transportation hubs in Alawite neighborhoods. The strike was called by prominent Alawite religious leader Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal and the Political Council of Central and Western Syria, which organized large protests across the coastal cities on 25 November.

Syrian Forces Evict Alawites From Damascus Neighborhood En Masse

Continuing the purge of Syria’s Alawite minority that began with large scale massacres back in March, Interior Ministry security forces have almost entirely depopulated the metro Damascus neighborhood of al-Somaria, which was up until the raids, an Alawite majority area. The raids began in late August, with security forces led by an Interior Ministry commander known as Abu Hudhayfah entering al-Somaria with guns and eviction orders. They went door to door and informed Alawite locals that they were living there illegally and demanded they prove otherwise. Those who couldn’t immediately document the ownership had their homes spray-painted with O’s, meaning they had to leave within 48 hours.
