Mental Health Professionals Join Calls For Boycott Of Advertising Agencies

Health organisations should cut ties with advertising agencies that work for the fossil fuel industry to protest the role of greenwashing in delaying climate action, says a group of mental health advocates. In an open letter, a dozen researchers and clinicians warned of the growing toll of despair suffered by displaced families, the disorientation and grief communities face after floods, drought and wildfires, and the anxiety of children facing a worsening climate crisis. “Advertising and public relations firms that serve both the health sector and the fossil fuel industry are working at cross purposes.

From Farms To Data Centers: The Gas Industry’s Newest Sales Pitch

“In all my days here, this is the biggest black eye that Pittsylvania County has experienced,” says Amanda Sink Wydner, leader of the local opposition to plans for a massive new power plant and data center complex in Chatham, a small town in southern Virginia. On April 15, the county government will vote on whether to rezone hundreds acres of farmland to heavy industrial use, which would allow Balico LLC, a natural gas power developer, to proceed with the project. As planned, it would have the biggest power demand of any data center complex in the world, according to rankings from Data Center Magazine.

Fossil Fuel Industry Wants To Keep New Buildings Dependent On Gas

A new report from InfluenceMap reveals the fossil fuel industry has been waging an international lobbying war to prevent cities and towns from requiring newly built homes and businesses to install climate-friendly heating and other appliances. So far, 26 U.S. states have passed laws designed to prevent towns, cities, and other local governments from crafting new “natural gas bans” or enforcing those laws, according to the report. The analysis shows how utilities and their trade associations have pushed to take away local government’s power to phase out fossil fuel appliances or to limit new buildings’ connections to natural gas pipelines.

Confronting DC’s Gas Problem

From Oct. 24-26, a coalition of ecoactivist groups, including Extinction Rebellion Northeast, Extinction Rebellion DC, or XRDC, Scientist Rebellion, and Climate Defiance, engaged in three days of nonviolent actions against the gas industry in Washington, D.C. They disrupted the industry’s biggest annual event in North America, temporarily shut down construction on a major pipeline project, and built bridges of inter-movement solidarity by joining in protests for a ceasefire in Gaza.  The week of action began by disrupting the North American Gas Forum to demand an end to the gas industry’s lies that are accelerating climate chaos and endangering billions of lives around the globe.
