Rosebank

Activists Target Starmer’s Back Yard Over Toxic Fossil Fuel Project

On Saturday 6 September, activists protested against Rosebank, the UK’s largest untapped oil field. Describing it as “toxic”, Fossil Free London (FFL) have warned that even ignoring the climate concerns, drilling Rosebank would be financially detrimental to UK citizens. They’ve also highlighted the links Fossil Free London drew attention to the protest in the London Borough of Camden, which is where you find Starmer’s constituency of Holborn and St Pancras. The group said in a press release: The action in Camden saw over a hundred activists gather outside council buildings in Sir Keir Starmer’s constituency with a giant melting planet earth ice-cream, as part of a coordinated effort across the country to send a clear message to the Prime Minister: pull the plug on the toxic Rosebank field for good.

Protesters Remind Labour That Rosebank Is A Sinking Ship

On Wednesday 19 March, campaigners from Fossil Free London staged a Titanic-themed demonstration in Westminster over the Labour Party government’s potential re-approval of the climate-wrecking Rosebank oil field. Campaigners recreated the infamous scene in which lead character Jack Dawson drowns as Rose clings to a door in the sea. They chanted “There’s an iceberg we don’t want to hit! Rosebank is a sinking ship” with a banner reading “Let Go of Rosebank”. This was to draw a creative parallel with the approaching climate emergency and the government’s potential reapproval of the project’s development.

Legal Challenges Against Rosebank Oil Field Given The Green Light

Rosebank will do nothing to lower energy bills, save jobs, or make our energy supply more secure. It will only make billions for oil giants, with the UK public footing the bill through billions in tax breaks. The previous government knew this - and approved the field anyway. We believe that the decision to approve Rosebank was not only a disaster for the climate, and morally and economically wrong, but unlawful.  Claims that drilling Rosebank is compatible with the UK’s obligations and a safe climate doesn't add up - and we will prove it in court. This is now a straight fight between a livable future and oil and gas industry profits. The UK government has already admitted the decision was unlawful.
