Sit-In At Mayor’s Office To Demand Stronger Sanctuary Policy

Minneapolis, MN – On October 28, members of the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC) held a rally outside Minneapolis City Hall, demanding stronger protections for immigrant communities. The demonstration culminated in a sit-in at Mayor Jacob Frey’s office, where 11 MIRAC members and supporters refused to leave until the mayor publicly committed to supporting their Real Sanctuary Now campaign. The campaign calls for a significant overhaul of Minneapolis’s current “separation ordinance” – a law meant to prohibit collaboration between city employees and federal immigration enforcement agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Minneapolis On Tuesday, August 5, the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC) and other community groups held a press conference to announce their new campaign for “ICE Out of Minneapolis: Sanctuary for Real!” The campaign pushes city elected officials to strengthen the separation ordinance that says that the Minneapolis Police Department cannot collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Demands include “No collusion: no local law enforcement information sharing with federal agencies; no crowd control: no local law enforcement cooperation with ICE, HSI, and other federal agencies

Tallahassee Community Pushes For LGBTQ Sanctuary City

Tallahassee, FL - On July 13 Tallahassee community organizers and experts gave presentations at the Mayor's LGBTQ+ Advisory Council at City Hall. The presentation's focus was the demand to transform Tallahassee into an LGBTQ sanctuary city. The Tallahassee Community Action Committee (TCAC), represented by its president, Delilah Pierre, and communications director, Regina Joseph, led the program. The presentation was created in response to the anti-LGBTQ policies enacted under Governor Ron DeSantis' administration. These laws include the anti-trans law that forces people to use the bathroom associated with their assigned sex at birth and the ban on gender-affirming care for minors.
