The attack came after suspected US airstrikes hit several sites in eastern Syria’s Deir Ezzor governorate.
US forces at Washington’s occupation base in the Conoco oil field near eastern Syria’s Deir Ezzor governorate came under heavy attack during the early hours of 29 September.
“Intense rocket and drone bombardment targeted the headquarters of the US occupation’s armored forces stationed at the Conoco gas field base in Deir Ezzor,” Al Mayadeen’s correspondent cited field sources as saying.
“The intense shelling on Conoco resulted in direct hits on the headquarters of the armored division,” according to one of the sources.
Sputnik’s correspondent reported the attack left casualties among the occupation troops.
Local sources said the strikes were launched in response to a series of US airstrikes on Deir Ezzor’s Harabeesh neighborhood.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said “unknown” aircraft targeted Deir Ezzor and the Albukamal border crossing with Iraq late on Saturday night, killing at least a dozen members of “pro-Iranian militias.”
Several were also wounded in the raids, according to SOHR. According to North Press Agency (NPA), 18 were killed in the suspected US airstrike, which reportedly targeted the home of an unknown official from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Deir Ezzor “was subjected to an air attack launched by US occupation fighters on military sites on the outskirts of Deir Ezzor city near the military airport, and raids on the city of Albukamal near the Iraqi border in the town of Al-Hari,” Sputnik said.
Over the past year, US bases in Iraq and Syria have come under repeated attacks by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) umbrella group, which came together last October in support of Gaza and solidarity with the Palestinian resistance.
Under pressure from the Iraqi government, most factions within the IRI halted attacks on US bases in January. However, the group unofficially resumed operations in recent months.
The IRI also been attacking targets in Israel.
“The Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq attacked a vital target in Umm al-Rashrash (Eilat) in our occupied territories at dawn today, Sunday 9/29/2024, using drones,” the IRI said on 29 September.
An Iraqi drone penetrated Israeli airspace on the evening of 24 September, making an impact at a military base.
Video footage released the following day from the targeted base showed extensive damage.
