Nicaragua accuses Germany of complicity in the Israeli genocide.
People around the world are outraged by Israel’s brutal actions in Gaza, which have been bringing death and destruction to the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza, day after day and night after night for half a year now.
On January 26, 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) deemed the accusation of genocide made by South Africa against Israel in this context to be “plausible” and will pursue it further in a main trial. At the same time, however, Israel was called upon to immediately provide maximum protection for the civilian population, to ensure their supplies and to immediately stop the many calls for genocide in Israel!
But: the opposite has happened! Since then, around 10,000 more people have been killed in Palestine, the UNRWA aid organization, a lifeline for emergency supplies, has been blocked, and the genocidal incitement from Israel has even been stepped up! In addition to the mass violent deaths, there is now an acute risk of epidemics, malnutrition and starvation.
At the end of March, the UN Security Council has finally called on Israel to call an immediate ceasefire, without any dissenting votes.
Now it must be ensured that any international support for Israel, especially any military complicity, is condemned as a contribution to genocide!
This is precisely what Nicaragua’s action before the ICJ is intended to achieve, using Germany as an example.
Why Germany? A long trail of genocide runs through its history in the 20th century, beginning with the Nama and Herero in its former colony in what is now Namibia and continuing with the Holocaust of Jews, Sinti and Roma, as well as many other population groups, especially in Eastern Europe, in the course of the Second World War. Has it really operated a turnaround? Today, it denies the colonialist character of Zionism and supports Israel’s current genocidal policy, politically, ideologically and above all militarily, through a misconceived solidarity with the Jewish victims of that time. In 2023, it even increased its arms export licenses for Israel tenfold, most of them after 7 October. Germany is Israel’s second most important arms supplier after the USA, but the USA has legally ruled out charges of genocide at the ICJ. Germany was also one of the first to end vital support to, and through, UNRWA.
For months, hundreds of thousands have been taking to the streets alongside Palestinians in many cities to criticize the double standards practiced by politicians and the media. These only call for human rights and international humanitarian law when it serves German interests. And they are trying to suppress Palestinian solidarity, and in particular the Palestinian inhabitants of Germany, in the exercise of their democratic rights.
An attempt is now being made to bring this blind complicity with Israel’s genocidal policy to an end in court, thanks to Nicaragua’s complaint to the ICJ in The Hague. Alongside pressure from the streets, this is an important building block in the German and international solidarity campaign. It increases the pressure to finally act on the alleged “concerns” about the permanent violations of rights by Israel that have been put forward by Western states for years!
Let’s raise our protest, loud and clear, during the Hearings of the Nicaragua (April 8, 2024) and Germany (April 9, 2024) cases before the ICJ in The Hague against Germany’s complicity and assistance in Israel’s genocide.
On these two days, rallies and vigils will be organized in front of the International Court of Justice in The Hague and in front of many embassies and consulates of the Federal Republic of Germany abroad.
This background to the proceedings before the International Court of Justice can and will also be highlighted in the days and weeks before and after the planned Palestine Solidarity events – particularly in Germany but also internationally.
