March against police brutality, racial injustice and economic inequality.
Newark, NJ – The MILLION PEOPLE’S MARCH Against Police Brutality, Racial Injustice, And Economic Inequality happens today, Saturday, JULY 25, 2015,12 Noon, starting at the Lincoln Monument, located at the intersection of West Market Street and Springfield Avenue in downtown Newark, New Jersey. The march is sponsored by the People’s Organization For Progress (POP) and endorsed by 150 community, labor, student, and progressive organizations.
The demonstration is expected to be very large, perhaps the largest in Newark in several decades. Participants will not only be coming from cities and towns in New Jersey but also from different parts of the country. Protestors will be coming from other states including Georgia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and New York.
Guest speakers will include Dr. Cornel West, Assemblyman Charles Barron, and POP Chairman Lawrence Hamm. Other speakers will include family members of persons killed by police including the mothers of Abdul Kamal, Kashad Ashford, and Jerame Reid. Activists, elected officials, religious leaders and labor leaders will also be speaking.
A number of demands will be put forward by those who will address the gathering. These include the establishment of community controlled police review boards, and legislation to ban police chokehold, residency requirements for police, and creation of a special prosecutor to investigate the killing of citizens by police.
Additional demands will be put forward regarding issues of racial injustice and economic inequality such as abolition of voter identification and stand your ground laws, increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and the creation of a New Deal type national jobs program.
