Camera Training Is Revolutionizing Protests Against Police Brutality In Ferguson

With the Ferguson Police Department, Missouri State Police, Federal law enforcement and military planning a heavy-handed response to upcoming protests, we decided there was no better time to get in touch with the activists on the ground who are revolutionizing the way police are held accountable.

We contacted Jacob from the Canfield Watchmen to ask about the camera training that his group is engaged in, which is changing the game in Ferguson and surrounding areas.

With newly leaked information tipping off protesters to police plans to use third party hackers to block cell phone video live streaming, this camera training might prove more important than ever with the reading of the verdict in the Officer Darren Wilson case.

CCN: Can you tell us a bit about the Canfield Watchmen? How’d you get started?

CWM: The Canfield Watchmen was created to protect the [Michael Brown] memorial. Soon after the death of Micheal Brown the neighbors gathered at the memorial at all hours of the day and night directing traffic and keeping the peace so people from all over could come see the memorial and feel safe. The men out there night after night were regular men watching their neighborhood, and that is why we are called the Canfield Watchmen.

CCN: What were the catalyzing events that led to your activity?

The most catalyzing event that occurred would have to be the aftermath of Micheal Brown’s death. The way the police handled the situation with dogs, rifle, and a heavy presence, made it clear that they did not care and they did not want his memorial in the street. My three beautiful children Aurolla 3, David Jr. 2 and 4 month old Byron are the reason why I’m out here everyday. My kids have to have future, our children of the world deserve a future.

CCN: What are you goals?

CWM: My first goal is to raise awareness that police need to be held accountable. My second goal is to equip all of our residents with cameras. My third goal is to teach people their rights specifically pertaining to the police.

CCN: How does one get involved?

CCN: What is your advice to activists fighting against police brutality and demanding police accountability? 

CWM: My advice to police activists is don’t give up and keep fighting, we only lose when we stop!
