This week on Clearing the FOG Radio:
On September 23 and 24, the World Beyond War conference on war and the environment will be held in Washington, DC. It is a step in connecting anti-war and environmental activists to build a stronger movement. Gar Smith, a long time peace and environmental activists and journalist, and editor of The War and the Environment Reader, is a primary organizer of the conference. We speak with him about the conference, war culture that is deeply ingrained in our society and what to do about it.
September 13, 2017, was the tenth anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Far from being a declaration by and for Indigenous Nations, the United States and allies discarded the original declaration that was agreed to by Indigenous representatives from around the world who drafted it in a process that took ten years. The final declaration was made against the will of Indigenous Nations. Charmaine White Face, the spokesperson for the Great Sioux Nation, participated in and protested the UN process. She wrote about it in her book, Indigenous Nation’s Rights in the Balance. The final declaration removed references to Indigenous Nations and prevented legal means for redress of grievances. We spoke with Charmaine White Face about the declaration and the ongoing violation of treaties with Indigenous Nations.
