Unity for Julian is holding an online vigil to provide information and updates on Julian Assange’s status in the Ecuadorian Embassy.
Watch the vigil here:
News broke yesterday that Julian Assange is facing imminent expulsion from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. The news was leaked by whistleblowers. The justification for the expulsion is that Wikileaks released the INA Papers, which implicate the Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno in corruption.
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture released a press release saying:
“In my assessment, if Mr. Assange were to be expelled from the Embassy of Ecuador, he is likely to be arrested by British authorities and extradited to the United States,” said the UN expert. “Such a response could expose him to a real risk of serious violations of his human rights, including his freedom of expression, his right to a fair trial and the prohibition of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

Listen to our recent interview with Joe Lauria of Consortium News, who has been hosting the weekly Unity for J online vigils, on Clearing the FOG. We speak about Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning.
The Unity for J Vigil writes the following, including ways to support Julian Assange and background information:
Julian Assange has been arbitrarily detained in the UK for eight years, six of which he has spent as a political refugee in Ecuador’s embassy in London.
The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has ruled Mr Assange should be immediately freed and compensated. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights has ruled that the UK must facilitate safe passage for him. #Unity4J is a global mass movement in solidarity with Julian Assange, created in response to Ecuador’s gagging of the publisher.
Unity4J has been endorsed by more than fifty high profile activists, journalists, celebrities, academics and former US intelligence officials including John Kiriakau Ray McGovern, Bill Binney and Daniel Ellsberg.
