Regime Change And Climate Change: Connecting The Dots

On May 23, Popular Resistance hosted the webinar: Regime Change And Climate Change: Connecting The Dots. The goal of the webinar was to deepen the understanding of the connections between US militarism and imperialism and the climate crisis and encourage greater collaboration between the anti-war/anti-imperialist and climate justice movements. The focus of the webinar was on Iran and Venezuela, two countries with the largest oil reserves in the world and that are being targeted by the United States.

The speakers were:

Margaret Flowers – co-director of Popular Resistance, a member of the Embassy Protection Collective. Margaret traveled to Iran and Venezuela last year on peace delegations. She opened the webinar with a broad picture of the 2020s as a time when many crises are coming to a head and a time full of potential for transformative change.

Lorah Steichen  –  Outreach Coordinator for the National Priorities Project at the Institute for Policy Studies. Lorah covered the new primer she co-authored with Lindsay Koshgarian “No Warming No War: How Militarism Fuels the Climate Crisis and Vice Versa.” Contact info@popularresistance.org if you would like a copy of her PowerPoint. It is a great for sharing with anti-war and climate justice groups.

Quincy Saul – co-founder with Joel Kovel of Ecosocialist Horizons and a member of the First Ecosocialist International. He spoke about the importance of ecosocialism in Venezuela’s Bolivarian Process.

David Schwartzman – professor emeritus at Howard University and co-author with his son Peter of “The Earth is Not for Sale: A Path Out Of Fossil Capitalism to the Other World that is Still Possible.” He spoke about oil reserves in Venezuela and Iran in relation to the U.S. regime change agenda and climate change.
