UPS Automation Used To Cut Jobs, Endanger Workers

Arlington, TX – Plans are moving forward for UPS to automate much of the work at its Lonestar Hub. UPS has framed the automation push as “Modernization” and has favored a “Better, Not Bigger” policy which means reducing overall volume while increasing profits for the company. UPS is anticipating a 6% gain in revenue per package as a result of recent changes; however, they also expect to see a decline of 8.5% in average daily volume. They expect to achieve this by focusing less on volume and more on transporting goods that bring a higher profit per package delivered.

Amazon Workers Defy Dictates Of Automation

Amazon delivery stations are being outfitted with robots across the country, leading to fewer workers and speedup for the workers that remain. Workers have reacted with defiance at the delivery station where I work. Amazon fulfillment centers, where items are packaged up, have been gradually automating, but until now, delivery stations were mostly operated by human labor. Now, entire systems are being retrofitted or entirely removed “in the name of safety” and “for the good of employees.” But automation means workers will be laid off, shifted into new positions, or forced to transfer. I work at the New York delivery station DBK4, in Maspeth, Queens, and it’s a window into this future.

The Rise Of The Multipolar World, With Economist Richard Wolff

In the latest episode of Behind The Headlines’ “Most Censored News” series, Lee Camp and Professor Richard Wolff discuss the waning of economic power in the United States and the potential reasons for this decline. Richard Wolff is a well-known economist and host of the nationally syndicated show “Economic Update.” He is a Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a visiting professor at the graduate program at the New School in New York City. He cofounded the non-profit group, Democracy at Work and is the author of several books, including, “The Sickness is the System: When Capitalism Fails to Save Us from Pandemics or Itself.” One reason for U.S. decline, according to Wolff, is the automation transformation and its impact on employment in the country.

Automation And The Trade Deficit Are Decimating US Ports

Growing up in San Pedro Bay near Los Angeles, California, Sal DiCostanzo, an executive board member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 13 and a dock worker for over 20 years, has seen jobs in numerous industries at the ports disappear, many of which were exported. “The last remaining jobs that are here that are good paying union jobs with benefits are longshore and other related supply chain jobs,” said DiCostanzo. “Automating these jobs would be taking away the only jobs left for this community.” DiCostanzo also pushed back on proponents of automation using clean technology as an incentive to do so, saying manual equipment that is electric can be introduced as well, and that environmental justice can’t be achieved at the expense of economic justice.

ILA President Warns Members Will Not Work Ships Without Crews Aboard

North Bergen, NJ - Harold J. Daggett, President, International Longshoremen’s Association has a message to any shipping companies planning to utilize autonomous container cargo ships without crew: Don’t sail them into ILA ports from Maine To Texas, Puerto Rico, and Eastern Canada – they won’t be unloaded or loaded by ILA Members! Media reports in recent week have featured stories from Norway and Japan about companies and shipping lines developing and testing container vessels that will sail with no crew aboard – fully self-piloted,” relying on satellite guidance, onboard sensors, and artificial intelligence making decisions based on these inputs,” according to a Facebook posting by Seably, a European maritime on-line training company.
