COP30 Takes Place In Brazil, Seeking To Prevent ‘Climate Collapse’

On November 6, COP30 began in Brazil, a United Nations meeting attended by nearly 50 world leaders to address the most pressing issues of climate change. The meeting is being held in Belem, a city located in the Amazon, one of the regions most affected and threatened by climate change. Brazilian head of state Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is hosting a conference that aims to promote an agenda already agreed upon in the Paris Agreement which, according to the president, has not yet been fulfilled by the nearly 195 signatory countries. To this end, the meeting of world leaders will consist of three working groups (climate and nature; energy transition; and review of the Paris Agreement), in addition to a plenary session.

Argentine movements, unions, LGBTQ+ organizations, and political groups have joined together to call nationwide anti-fascist and anti-racist protests on Saturday February 1 in response to Javier Milei’s repeated attacks on the Argentine people. In his speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos last week, Milei launched sweeping attacks on progressive ideas like feminism, environmentalism, and what he calls “gender identity,” and praised far-right leaders Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, Viktor Orbán, and Giorgia Meloni. He also defended his harsh economic austerity policies, despite their impact on Argentina’s poorest communities.

The human toll of warfare is tragic beyond accounting in lives brutally cut short, grievous injuries suffered, cultural heritage lost (museums, religious structures, libraries, schools) and to vital infrastructure destroyed (hospitals, power plants, reservoirs). War as now fought has been with us at least since the establishment of agriculture, and as technology has advanced, its devastating abilities have escalated. Last century was the bloodiest in human history and we must make sure that record stands. Armed conflict at that scale with the current arsenal would be nightmarish beyond reckoning.
