State Department Launches ‘Free the Press’ Campaign Same Day DOJ Asks Supreme Court to Jail Reporter

The US State Department announced the launch of its third annual "Free the Press" campaign today, which will purportedly highlight "journalists or media outlets that are censored, attacked, threatened, or otherwise oppressed because of their reporting." A noble mission for sure. But maybe they should kick off the campaign by criticizing their own Justice Department, which, on the very same day, has asked the Supreme Court to help them force Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times reporter James Risen into jail. Politico's Josh Gerstein reports that the Justice Department filed a legal brief today urging the Supreme Court to reject Risen's petition to hear his reporter's privilege case, in which the Fourth Circuit ruled earlier this year that James Risen (and all journalists) can be forced to testify against their sources without any regard to the confidentiality required by their profession. This flies in the face of common law precedent all over the country, as well as the clear district court reasoning in Risen's case in 2012. (The government's Supreme Court brief can be read here.)

Chelsea Manning Lawyers Interviewed In Depth On Appeal

The case of Chelsea Manning is back in the spotlight. Last week, a U.S. Army general rejected Manning's request for clemency, thereby upholding her 35-year prison sentence. As you might remember, last year a military judge found Chelsea Manning, then known as Bradley Manning, guilty of 20 offenses. Despite being acquitted of the most serious charge of aiding the enemy, which carried with it a life sentence, Manning's 35-year sentence is the longest imposed on any American for leaking information to the media. One of Manning's new attorneys, Vincent Ward, says that Chelsea is ready for the long uphill battle to appeal the court's sentence. She's one of those rare people that found that it was her moral and ethical responsibility to inform the public about information that she thought was wrong and bad acts by the government. Is it proper for the government to punish somebody like Chelsea for 35 years, to put her in jail for 35 years, which, given her age, you know, it's not a life sentence, but she is going to be in jail for a really long time. And I think that the instinct of many is that the punishment doesn't fit the crime.

In Bolivia, Being Journalist And Organizer Go Together

Susana Pacara, one of the founders of Radio Lachiwana in Cochabamba, Bolivia, believes that communication work is a key part of the defense of territory. She doesn’t mean this in an abstract way. Over the years, Pacara has fought the privatization of water, the construction of mega highways and the attacks on the rights of coca growers. She’s braved tear gas and repression with such bravery that she’s earned the title “Mamá Susana.”And now she’s fulfilled her dream of transmitting these stories of resistance and defense at the national level. In Quechua, “lachiwana” refers to a little bee that makes its hive in the most secret of places. The word could almost just as easily describe Pacara herself. At 49 years old, she has a small build, which she says helps her get to all sorts of places, and a curious expression.

All Charges Dropped for HMC Journalist Miles Howe

Following his first and second arrest, after recovering his equipment and being released from jail, Howe resumed his job as a journalist. That pattern changed after his third arrest, when he was forced to sign conditions in order to be released from jail. Howe's conditions prohibited him from coming within one kilometer of protest sites, SWN’s (the shale gas company) equipment or SWN employees.
