Support The Campaign To Label GMO Foods NOW

If you want to see GMO's labels, respond to this message from Washington State where they are in a tough battle with Monsanto and other big ag companies: It’s about to get uglier. We are just over 24 hours from the final month of this campaign and the attacks we’ve been facing these last two weeks are the tip of the iceberg. We need you, Friend, to help us fight the lies. Click here to donate $5.22 into our Rapid TV Response Fund. Monsanto and their chemical company cronies are going to throw everything they’ve got at us, but we have something their corporate cash can’t buy...all of you. Midnight tomorrow is the deadline for us to raise $40,000. If we hit our goal we’ll be in a strong position to withstand the onslaught we’re facing.

The People Triumph Over Biotech: Monsanto Protection Act Defeated In The Senate

"Finally, it seems like we have the attention of some of the members of Congress. As the result of an enormous outcry, the Senate voted down the rider that was recently approved by the House of Representatives. The rider would have continued Big Biotech’s immunity against prosecution resulting from their toxic farming practices and questionable crops. As of September 30th, the so-called Monsanto Protection Act will be dead. This is a major victory for anti-GMO activists as it is the first time that Congress has decided in favor of the constituents as opposed to companies like Monsanto, Sygenta, Bayer, and Dow."

Video: House Extends Monsanto Protection Act

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives released a bill to extend the agricultural spending bill known as the "Monsanto protection act". This bill allows Monsanto to continue to sell their crops even if a federal court deems it illegal. With us to discuss the controversial bill is Colin O'Neil. He's the director of government affairs at the Center for Food Safety, a national organization founded to protect human health and the environment. So, Colin, can you just break down for us what exactly is in this bill? And can you speak specifically to how this bill protects Monsanto?

BigAg Dumps Millions to Defeat GMO-Labeling in Washington

Once again, a state is putting forth a ballot measure to label genetically modified foods, and once again, a familiar cast of characters is spending millions to defeat the measure. The battle this time is in Washington, which has on its ballot this November I-522. As MapLight summarizes, the initiative "would require most raw agricultural commodities, processed foods, and seeds and seed stocks, if produced using genetic engineering as defined, to be labeled as genetically engineered when offered for retail sale." In the past week, Monsanto gave a $4.5 million dollar donation to the 'No' on 522 campaign, while DuPont gave $3.2 million. Other big donors hoping to defeat the measure are Bayer CropScience and the Grocery Manufacturers Association.

Monsanto Gearing Up For War Against Food Justice Activists?

The largest mercenary army in the world, Blackwater (later called Xe Services and more recently “Academi“) clandestine intelligence services was sold to the multinational Monsanto. Blackwater was renamed in 2009 after becoming famous in the world with numerous reports of abuses in Iraq, including massacres of civilians. It remains the largest private contractor of the U.S. Department of State “security services,” that practices state terrorism by giving the government the opportunity to deny it. Monsanto executive Kevin Wilson confirmed to The Nation that they had hired Total Intelligence in 2008 and 2009, according to Monsanto only to keep track of “public disclosure” of its opponents. He also said that Total Intelligence was a “totally separate entity from Blackwater.” It is a marriage between the two most brutal monopolies in the history of industrialism.

Pesticide Use Spikes as GMO Failure Cripples Corn Belt

Pesticide use is skyrocketing across the Midwestern U.S. corn belt, as biotech companies like Syngenta and AMVAC Chemical watch their pesticide sales spike 50 to 100 percent over the past two years, NPR reported Tuesday. The culprit? Bt corn—a type of genetically engineered corn with insecticide built into its genes. Variations of this corn strain—peddled across the world by large multinationals including Monstanto and Syngenta—are giving rise to Bt resistant insects and worms, studies show.

Monsanto is Losing the Press

Ah, high summer. Time to read stories about the declining effectiveness of GMO-seed giant Monsanto's flagship products: crops engineered to resist insects and withstand herbicides. Back in 2008, I felt a bit lonely participating in this annual rite—it was mainly just me and reporters in a the Big Ag trade press. Over the past couple of years, though, it's gone mainstream. Here's NPR's star agriculture reporter Dan Charles, on corn farmers' agri-chemically charged reaction to the rise of an insect that has come to thumb its nose at Monsanto's once-vaunted Bt corn, engineered to contain the bug-killing gene of a bacteria called Bacillus thuringiensis:

Videos – March Against Monsanto

Here are two youtube videos concerning last week's international day of action against Monsanto. The first is about the total lack of corporate media coverage despite protests involving over a million people in more than 400 countries. The second is an inspiring speech by retired Police Captain Ray Lewis, participating in the march against Monsanto in Philadelphia.
