Oglala Sioux Tribe Wins Legal Case Against Powertech Uranium Mine

Powertech (now a subsidiary of enCore Energy) planned to start mining uranium in the southwestern Black Hills in 2009. Thanks to the Oglala Sioux Tribe, the BHCWA and its allies, and you — they are not mining and its 2024. And this decision means that they won’t be anytime soon. In the Press-Release open from the Oglala Sioux Tribe they state: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Appeals Board (EAB) has ruled in favor of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in a case involving a proposed uranium mine in Fall River and Custer Counties, South Dakota. The EAB sent the EPA’s Underground Injection Control (UIC) permits for the proposed Powertech Dewey-Burdock uranium mine, owned by parent company enCore Energy, back to EPA Region 8 (located in Denver, CO) to reconsider the permitting decision.

Eagle Butte, South Dakota - On Wednesday, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Council joined the Oglala Sioux Tribe in banishing South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem from tribal lands. The ban comes amid recent comments made by Gov. Noem suggesting that tribal leaders were in partnership with Mexican cartels, and a day after Noem made a statement asking tribal leaders to banish cartels from tribal lands. “I call on all our tribal leaders to banish the cartels from tribal lands,” said South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem in a statement on Tuesday, April 4.

South Dakota—Last week, while signing two education bills Governor Kristi Noem made comments about wanting to improve Native American students’ achievement, and blamed parents and Tribal leaders for their poor performance. Gov. Noem also said that some Tribal leaders in the state were in partnership with Mexican cartels, and four Tribal Nations have responded demanding an apology. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (CRST) issued a statement saying, “Last week while visiting Mitchell and Winner, South Dakota, Governor Noem used those events as an opportunity to spew hateful gossip about Native people.

Prominent Museum Is Holding Items From Massacre Of Native Americans

One afternoon earlier this year, Wendell Yellow Bull received a call from a longtime friend with word of a troubling discovery. Objects from one of the most notorious massacres of Native Americans in U.S. history were in the collections of the American Museum of Natural History, his friend said. Some of them appeared to be children’s toys, including a saddle and a doll shirt. Memories of what Yellow Bull had been told about the incident throughout his life came rushing back. Yellow Bull is a descendant of Joseph Horn Cloud, who survived the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee.
