‘If We Stop, The World Stops!’: Hundreds Of Thousands Of Spanish Women Take To Streets For Feminist Strike

Hundreds of thousands of people across Spain marked International Women's Day on Friday with a "feminist strike." The strike, in its second consecutive year, demanded stronger efforts to combat gender-based discrimination, pay gaps, and violence. Last year's strike drew global attention as more than 5 million women took to Spain's streets to shine a light on such issues. On Friday, unions, feminist groups, and left-wing political parties planned 1,400marches and rallies in Madrid, Barcelona, and cities throughout the country, guided by the slogan, "If we stop, the world stops."

Peace Is A Feminist Issue

War ruins the life of anyone it comes into contact with. But on International Women’s Day, it is important that we remember that for every harm visited upon men by war, women suffer a disproportionate amount of cruelty. Women are systematically shunned from institutions of power around the world, the same institutions who decide to engage in the conflicts that will destroy the lives of women. Women then also struggle to have their voices heard by the powers who try to help in conflict zones, so often the issues that only affect women go unnoticed. The most basic needs of women in conflict zones are often a revelation to men. There is always a presumption of gender neutrality (read, maleness) when large groups of people are discussed. This means the concept of displaced people needing sanitary products in refugee camps is never considered because gender neutral (read, male) people don’t have periods.

A Native Reflection On International Women’s Day

By Kelly Hayes for Transformative Spaces - Today is International Women’s Day, and I expect to see a great many posts about women who have changed the world. And even though I am sure there will be an unfortunate tendency to lift up accomplished, American white women, at the expense of militant freedom fighters, trans women and Black and Brown women, I know that the people I am fortunate enough to share space with online will present me with some quality reading material that will leave me more knowledgeable by the day’s end, and I am grateful for that.

The Socialist Origins Of International Working Women’s Day

By Jennie Ernewein for Fightback - Over 100 years have passed since the first International Women’s Day was organized. Although International Women’s Day (IWD) has, in recent years, become an event that focuses on the celebration of women’s rights and achievements, the socialist origins of the IWD have become lesser known. Originally called International Working Women’s Day, it was proposed by Clara Zetkin of the International Women’s Conference that was linked to the Socialist Second International in 1910.
