Turkish Twitter Users Circumvent Ban Via HootSuite

Yesterday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced an attempt to “eradicate” Twitter. The move was a response to criticism on the social network of widespread corruption in his government. The ban has so far proved ineffective. Today, The Guardian reported that Twitter users in Turkey have managed to send 2.5 million tweets since the announcement. Turkey ranks 8th in the world in Twitter penetration, and the government’s recent efforts to curb its citizens access to social media do not appear to be diminishing their enthusiasm for it. HootSuite has emerged as one of the tools Twitter users are turning to as a means of circumventing the ban. Our traffic from Turkey has tripled in 24 hours. Through HootSuite, users can access their Twitter accounts, as well as Facebook, Google+ Pages and LinkedIn accounts. This follows the pattern we observed during the Arab Spring uprising in Egypt.

Following Twitter ‘Ban’, Turkish Protesters Storm Twitter

“Twitter, mwitter!” he said at a rally Thursday, before the site was blocked—what many are calling a “digital coup.” The phrase roughly translates as “Twitter, schmitter!” “We will wipe out all of these,” Erdogan said. “The international community can say this, can say that. I don’t care at all. Everyone will see how powerful the Republic of Turkey is.” However, as it turns out, it is increasingly hard to keep citizens from their social media tools. Using an alternate DNS service, "the number of which is being posted everywhere," reports Business Insider Government officials, however, claim the ban is not politically motivated, and merely the result of a Turkish court order ”that demanded the online service take down links that had allegedly insulted Turkish citizens,” the Washington Post reports.

Comic Bumped From Bill Because There Were ‘Too Many Women’

A female comedian named Jenny Collier has revealed she was recently dropped from a stand-up bill at a club in Haslemere, Surrey, U.K. because there were already “too many women” on the bill. Aaaaaaand happyInternational Women’s Day, everyone. Yesterday evening, Collier tweeted a screenshot of the e-mail she received from the venue’s proprietors booting her from the May 15 event. Since yesterday morning, Collier’s tweet has been retweeted more than 4,000 times by women all over the world, yet the identity of the anonymous stand-up club proprietor remains a mystery. U.K. blogger Red Mister did a littlesleuthing, however, and determined that the only Haslemere club hosting an event on May 15 is Hemingways of Haslemere. Hemingways is owned by the comedy chain Mirth Control, which books more than 100 venues in Britain and Europe.

People Are Protesting Twitter’s Massive Tax Breaks

SEIU Local 1021, which represents 13,000 city and county of San Francisco workers, brought out hundreds of its members to march on the headquarters of Twitter. The company was targeted because of an exceptionally generous tax break it receives from the city for locating its offices in the Mid-Market area. These tax breaks added up to $55 million in 2013 alone, according to the San Francisco Chronicle and are expected to be even greater this year. Meanwhile, Local 1021 says its members - city employees - are being pressured to make concessions at the bargaining table, most notably in the amount they have to contribute toward health care costs for them and their families, because the city is running at a deficit. "As the city claims a deficit, corporations continue to get a free pass while services are being affected and unjustified health care costs are passed on to public and family budgets," says Larry Bradshaw, vice president for SEIU Local 1021 and paramedic with the fire department.
