Hours, days, weeks and months; a succession of events that have ranged from resistance to exhaustion; from dignity to ignominy; of the commitment to life and freedom, even at the cost of a willingness to surrender life itself in order to achieve it. What is the cost of justice?—What does it cost? Can you imagine being imprisoned for 15 years, 14 of which you serve without a sentence, having lost your family, not counting on a single peso of income during this time, because the prison has you kidnapped.

Zapatista’s ‘Women in Struggle’ Summit Sets Historical Precedent

Thousands of women met in Zapatista territory against capitalist and patriarchal society. Thousands of women from all around the world met in Zapatista territory to participate in the first Women in Struggle International Summit, hosted by Mayan Zapatista women. The Zapatistas say over 5,000 women came to the Caracol of Morelia for the summit, which took place between March 8 and 10. Women started gathering in Caracol, located in a remote area of the Tzotz Choj zone of Chiapas, one day before the opening ceremony to begin arranging accommodation for themselves at the designated shelters or set up tents. More than 200 political, artistic and sports proposals had been registered for workshops and showcases, including music, dance, theater, poetry, book presentations, photography, cinema, football and volleyball.

Volumes have been written about the Mayan indigenous Zapatista social movement of Chiapas, Mexico since they made their first public appearance on January 1, 1994. There have been detailed histories, political analysis, academic theorization, movement studies, activist ethnographies, non-fiction novels, attempts at cultural and symbolic translation, etc. The movement’s primary spokesman, the prolific Subcomandante Marcos, has also contributed numerous communiqués, satires, children’s stories, erotica, pop culture commentary, political and philosophical ruminations. However, until now, we were missing the direct voices of women from the communities themselves. Hilary Klein’s Compañeras: Zapatista Women’s Stories(Seven Stories Press) reveals their perspectives as contemporary indigenous women who are active subjects together with men in shared processes of change and liberation.
